There are four races to tackle in the competition for the opening day at York, and here are my selections. Good luck!

This will be no easy feat for Jm Jungle having to defy a mark 10lb higher than when scoring at Haydock in July. However, he has shown himself to be versatile regarding the ground when backing up on soft ground at Goodwood. The form has taken a few knocks, although the seventh Desperate Hero came out and won a nice pot at Newbury last time out.

He undoubtedly will need to improve again, but he stayed on very strongly at Goodwood in the manner of a horse who had more improvement. The draw in 19 is arguably the major concern with El Astronaute (18) and Dakota Gold (10) the only horses to win from a double-figure draw since 2015.

Korker is rock-solid. He boasts excellent handicap form at the track and also boasts placed efforts in Listed company. He has only won four of his 20 starts, but he always seems to run his race. A mark of 102 remains on the high side, but he has been running with such credit again this term that he surely has to be bang there.

Selections: Jm Jungle and Korker.

Zanndabad is obviously going to have his backers and could make a mockery of his mark of 95 given he has Listed form in France. Robert Johnson does things his own way given he was last out of the paddock and Goodwood, but there was no doubting the way he stayed on last time out when second to Temporize. Already a winner over course and distance, the handicapper may not have got a grip on him just yet and despite having to shoulder another 4lb rise, he might still be progressing.

Tronador was third at Goodwood, but I thought that was a run full of promise. He was held up towards the back of the field and I think he stayed on to very good effect in the closing stages. I think the drop back in trip could really suit and he is high on the shortlist.

Pinafore was very good at Nottingham, but has blotted the copybook at short prices in the past and she is a hard one to take on trust. Pillow Talk has run in some valuable events this term having landed the Marygate last season. She was a solid third at Pontefract last time out and the minimum trip is clearly where she is at her best.

However, Kimngrace could be thrown in here. A winner of a Listed contest on the All-Weather earlier this term off 93, his last win on turf came off 85, but he does continue to slide down the weights. Now off 89, there was definite progress at Chepstow last time out when he did catch the eye in the manner of which he stayed on.

Designer won this event last season and hinted at a return to form when fourth at Goodwood last time out. He met all sorts of trouble at a crucial stage when crying out for a gap and once finally getting in the clear in the final half-furlong, he fairly rattled home. He looks to have been primed for a repeat bid and should go close in this event.

Selections: Designer and Kimngrace.

Starlust and Dapper Valley could have this between them as the form of that event at Goodwood last time out looks strong. The former was keen in that event on testing ground, but he is taken to improve for the switch to better ground and with Ryan Moore aboard.

Dapper Valley was a good third at Goodwood last time out in what looked a decent handicap, staying on in good style in the closing stages and he is of interest here. Barnwell Boy is interesting at a price. Charlie Johnston reported that the ground was against him in the Molecomb and he was a very smart winner at Goodwood on his debut.
