An Introduction to RaceiQ Metrics

Timings data

Sectional time
The time (in seconds) the horse took to complete the section of the race. In Britain and Ireland this is over one furlong, 220 yards.
Final furlongs
The time (in seconds) the horse took to run the final furlongs of the race.
Flat races: Advertised race distance is less than or equal to 1m 110 yards: final 2 furlongs.
Flat races: Advertised race distance is greater than 1m 110 yards: final 3 furlongs.
Chase/Hurdles races: final 4 furlongs (0.5 miles) of the race.
Finishing speed percentage (FSP)
The average sectional time in the final furlongs (see above) as a percentage of the average sectional time over the full race. For example: a race with an FSP of 102% means the average sectional time of the final furlongs was 2% quicker than the full race.
Top speed
The fastest speed (in mph) that the horse reached in the race.
0-20 mph
The number of seconds a runner took to reach a speed of 20 miles per hour at the start of the race.

Time Analysis

Par Time
The finishing time we expect the winner of a race to achieve based on a series of race factors (racecourse, race distance, race class and going description).
Time Index
A score out of 10 which indicates how a race has performed in comparison with ‘Par’ by assessing the winning time against the distribution of expected winning times for the race.
A score of 9 would indicate a race run significantly faster than Par, while a score of 1 would indicate a race run significantly slower than Par.
Par Runner Sectionals
These compare a horse's sectionals against the 'optimum' sectional times.
These are the Par Sectional fractions for the race for that specific course and distance.
They are based on the sectionals that winning horses have achieved in races achieving the best Time Index scores. (Based on advice from experts we work with, the best race times will be achieved by horses running in the most efficient way).
Par FSP
Using the Par Sectionals we can provide an FSP that reflects a track's nuances and what FSP an 'evenly run race' would achieve.
For example: at Beverley, they run downhill early and uphill to finish, so you wouldn’t expect them to finish as fast as at Newmarket where they run into a dip in the second last furlong.

Jumping metrics

Jump Index
Assesses a horse’s jumping in its own right and without reference to the competition. The index produces a score out of ten reflecting how well the horse jumped at an obstacle or in a race.
Lengths Gained Jumping
The lengths gained by the horse at each obstacle in a race. A negative value indicates the horse lost lengths at the obstacle.
Measured against the median lengths gained (middle value) of the horses in the race.
Cumulative Lengths Gained Jumping
The cumulative sum of the lengths gained jumping through the race so far.
Entry speed
The speed (in mph) the horse was running at when it entered the Jumping Envelope.
Jumping Envelope
A section of the race which includes a steeplechase fence or hurdle. This section is defined as 30 metres before to 30 metres after a horse has landed from jumping over an obstacle.
Speed lost
The difference in a horse’s speed (in mph) from entering the Jumping Envelope to landing after jumping the obstacle.

Stride data

Average Stride Length
The average length (in metres) of the horse’s stride throughout the race. This is measured as the full cycle of a stride, e.g. the moment a horse’s back legs hit the ground, to the next time they hit the ground.
Average Stride Frequency
The average number of strides the horse made per second throughout the race.
