1.15pm - Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup (Group 2)
Will Trueshan strike for a remarkable fourth consecutive time on Champions Day? (Photo: Dan Abraham / focusonracing.com)
Trueshan bids for a remarkable fourth successive triumph in the Long Distance Cup and he has something like ideal conditions on the back of winning both of his latest starts after wind surgery. His latest success in the Prix du Cadran on ground that would have been lively enough underlines his current wellbeing and he followed up on Champions Day after winning at ParisLongchamp two years ago; he has the benefit of a three-week break this time rather than the fortnight gap previously. He can take a keen hold in his races still, with Hollie Doyle having to force the issue half a mile from home on his penultimate start, and with some potential pace on offer here he'll need to channel his energies as effectively as possible.
KYPRIOS is the fascinating one after looking a bit rusty on his return after a year away in the Irish St Leger last month but sticking on for second in really commendable fashion after being asked for his effort half a mile from home. His master trainer only just had him ready for that assignment and last season's star stayer is in line to take a good step forward here after a light campaign and with bullish noises from the yard about his form and condition.
Coltrane was just pipped by Trueshan in this race last year and has enjoyed another good season before blowing out last time in the Doncaster Cup, his first-ever genuinely disappointing run on turf. Yet given his highly-consistent and admirable profile he can prove that latest effort an anomaly here and, like Trueshan, he is also rated 117 (Kyprios 121) and the others in opposition shouldn't be able to hit that level.
The one exception might be Sweet William, the Sea The Stars half-brother to Hurricane Lane who is bred to be top-class and proved he belongs at this level when travelling strongly and only proving inferior to Trueshan at Doncaster. He handles testing ground and he is a lightly-raced performer with potentially significantly more to offer.
Selections:KYPRIOS and TRUESHAN
1.50pm - Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes (Group 1)
Kinross bids for successive victories in the big sprint under Frankie Dettori (Pic: Focusonracing)
Current title-holder Kinross is the place to start and, while the suspicion is that he's not quite on the same roll as the one which carried him into last season's race, he's clearly on good terms with himself and with the ground no issue he must have a pretty decent chance here and looks difficult to kick out of the shake-up. He's a deserving favourite, even if no horse is yet to defend their title in this race since the inception of Champions Day.
Sandrine has form that closely ties in with Kinross yet she is a much bigger price and holds every chance of going well on this Champions Day debut. The testing ground will be to her liking and she might settle a tad better over this shorter trip, while she has clearly benefitted for the application of a visor on recent starts. She did well to win at Doncaster last time in a success that underscores her current mood.
VADREAM is the obvious mudlark in this line-up and, after running good races in this contest for the last two years, she is set to get the genuinely deep ground that she thrives on now for this third attempt. She made a very eye-catching return over course and distance last time on fast ground which was a run very much with a view to this race and she has plenty in here favour here.
Run To Freedom ran second in this last year at a whopping 150-1 but he has quite a nice profile for this race as a contender with previous big-race experience lining up for a second crack and he still looks a little underestimated. The ground is admittedly an unknown at best and that is factored into his odds, but this race has surely been his target all year and he has a habit of running good races at big prices in strong company, most recently when second at 28-1 in the July Cup two starts ago.
Saint Lawrence is a big-priced outsider here and he took an alarming drift in the market before finishing midfield in the Sprint Cup at Haydock last time, but he had previously won a big Royal Ascot handicap on stable debut and then ran a blinder in Group One company in France next time. The Archie Watson yard has been noted for its success with sprinters and this six-year-old has more to offer. There's a chance he could show that here and on ground that should be OK for him.
Selections:VADREAM and KINROSS
2.25pm - Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (Group 1)
Free Wind bids for a Group One breakthrough but no horse aged five or older has won this race since the inception of Champions Day (Pic: Focusonracing)
A look at the trends suggests that the three-year-olds are the age group to generally side with here in the last decade or so and the beautifully-bred JACKIE OH makes decent appeal as a real improver who is making big strides at just the right time.
She ran a good race in the Irish 1000 Guineas just a few months after her career debut and this first try at 1m4f promises to unlock further improvement given how she stayed on to land the Rathbride Stakes over 1m1f at Gowran and then for a commendable second despite an interrupted passage in the Blandford Stakes. She was only beaten a neck by the top-class Blue Rose Cen last time and this greater staying test on slower ground should be more to her liking.
The other top contenders here on official ratings are all older fillies and mares and all are hard to knock given their form and records in Group One company against their own sex. Free Wind was a bit disappointing last time - admittedly in the Arc - but slower ground might suit her better and her unlucky Yorkshire Oaks second reads well in this context, while Above The Curve is a trier and there's just a chance that this longer trip can unlock the smidgeon more needed for another top-level success. Time Lock is a good filly who wants a good test to be seen at her best and, if she gets such a set-up, she should be on the premises given her habit for staying on well at the finish in her races.
Selections:JACKIE OH and FREE WIND.
3.05pm - Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Sponsored By Qipco) (Group 1)
Paddington attempts to add further lustre to a fine campaign (Photo: Dan Abraham / focusonracing.com)
It's generally paid to be with the three-year-olds in this end-of-season mile highlight on Champions Day and that age bracket looks to hold the foremost contenders this time.
PADDINGTON leads the way after a remarkable season in which he reappeared to win a handicap from a mark of 97 before winning four subsequent Group One races. Last seen when third beind Mostahdaf in the Juddmonte International at York, stepping down from an extended 10 furlongs on this testing ground (handles heavy) should suit him and he's been freshened up with a view to this prize.
Let's hope the anticipated match-up with Tahiyra materialises, even though the ground won't be optimal for the filly and her trainer has publicly issued going concerns in the build-up to the race (admittedly not for the first time). This filly handles some ease in the ground and on pedigree should be getting 10 furlongs, so hopefully she lines up and - heavy ground or not - will still hold decent claims in receipt of weight from all of her rivals and in a contest in which fillies have fared well in since 2011 (Minding and Persusive both winners and Elusive Kate and I Can Fly both placed).
Big Rock is another three-year-old arriving here on the back of an excellent season, even if Classic glory has evaded him like the aforementioned names after hitting the crossbar in three successive Group One races. He handles testing ground - he beat the Champion Stakes fancy Horizon Dore by five lengths back in the spring on that surface - and he does't look to have any genuine competition for the lead. Facteur Cheval is the other French challenger and deep ground will be up his street even if it's hard to see him reversing the form with Paddington from their Sussex Stakes meeting.
The interesting one is the top-class Nashwa, who drops down in trip here instead of contesting the Champion Stakes later on the card. The deteriorating ground is the reason for that and she ran a good race from a disadvantageous track position on ground described as Soft by Timeform in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood before high-quality efforts in the Juddmonte International and Irish Champion Stakes. She's only raced twice over a mile previously and the late switch seems reactionary rather than a wholly front-footed and positive one, but she has about the best form in this line-up and must go well.
Selections:PADDINGTON and TAHIYRA
3.45pm - Qipco Champion Stakes (Group 1)
Can Via Sistina beat the boys in the Champions Day highlight? (Photo: Healy Racing)
The French challenger Horizon Dore bids for a brilliant five-timer on his first run in Britain and in no less than the Champions Day highlight, though the fact he hasn't contested a Group One race yet would be unusual for a leading fancy for this race and, as far as official ratigs are concerned, he's only rated higher than three of his nine rivals in this.
Last year's winner Bay Bridge will enjoy this test more than the 1m4f and quick ground of the Arc last time but his best performances have come after extended breaks and the relatively quick turnaround is a concern, while the ground doesn't promise to be ideal for Mostahdaf. It should suit the redirected Via Sistina though and she can't be readily dismissed over this optimal 1m2f trip.
KING OF STEEL has been the siubject of bullish pre-race reports by trainer Roger Varian and conditions here will be fine while he surely still has more to offer. He fared best of the younger brigade chasing a strong pace in an excellent renewal of the King George at this track in the summer and he also ran well from an unfavoured position in the Irish Champion Stakes last time. He has a fine chance and could potentially prove the story of Champions Day with big-race victory under Frankie Dettori.
Selections: KING OF STEEL and MOSTAHDAF
4.25pm - Balmoral Handicap (Sponsored By Qipco)
A high-class handicap that concludes the richest raceday in the British calendar, this goes to particularly decent horses as outlined by the fact that horses rated 99 or lower have one win and placed just a further four times from 37 runners in the race's history (0.45 A/E).
Towards the top of the handicap is the place to start, although Migration would have to defy a mark of 113 to win this and he could only manage eighth last year from a rating 4lb lower. However, he will get the genuinely testing ground he relishes this time and his performance from a big positional disadvantage to land the Lincoln on his seasonal return still lingers in the memory. He can't be discounted, though future top-class performer Lord North was second in this off a mark of 110 while future Queen Anne winner Accidental Agent was fourth from the same rating.
David O'Meara is the trainer to note here with three winners, a second and a third from 20 attempts at the race and his runners who return for a second crack generally perform much better than first time around. Escobar and Shelir won this at the second attempt and stablemate RHOSCOLYN only beat one rival home last year but he travelled nicely for most of the contest and didn't get the best of runs, probably feeling the pinch at the end of a strongly-run mile. He will get the genuinely soft ground he thrives on this time and he's coming into form at just the right time. Blue For You represents the same stable and ran a bit better than his finishing position suggested last year too.
Docklands is particularly lightly-raced which wouldn't necessarily be the ideal profile for this, but he's unbeaten in two starts at this track and clearly has more in hand than his official mark suggests and the long-time ante-post favourite is fancied to play a role.
Sonny Liston probably has a bit more substance to him given he handles soft ground and has a string of strong efforts in competitive big-field handicaps, firstly when leading his side home in the Royal Hunt Cup and this more testing mile promises to suit him.
George Boughey saddles one of the leading fancies in Baradar but stablemate Raadobarg is one to bear in mind given his Listed and Group form on this belated handicap debut for a yard with a strong record with such runners. Deep ground will be fine.
Selections:RHOSCOLYN and MIGRATION
