The Jane Williams-trained La Luna Artista seems to be overlooked in the market despite running a fine race on Cheltenham's Festival Trials Day.

She has a couple of lengths to find with One Horse Town from last month's Grade Two, but she met trouble in running approaching the final flight that day and has significantly less hurdling experience

She could be open to much more improvement, particularly back on better ground. Yet, Harry Derham's gelding is only 9-4 for this race, and the selection is still widely available at 14-1.

La Luna Artista's jumping is also a big asset. She gained more than 14 lengths in the air on her first start over hurdles, where she won impressively, and then last time, on just her second start over obstacles, she recorded a RaceiQ Jump Index of 8.1, which was higher than One Horse Town.

She can reward each-way backers at a big price in receipt of a valuable 7lb.

The Eider chase has long been a favourite handicap of mine and is often run in desperate conditions. 

Conditions are a little easier and I think this looks a good opportunity for Fortunate Man to get back on the up after a slightly disappointing effort at Sandown last time. He had previously been a well-backed winner at Wetherby on Boxing Day. 

At seven, Fortunate Man is comparatively young for an out and out stayer and the waiting tactics were probably overdone last time out and he can do better. Richie McClernon may be at the veteran stage but there are still not many better riders in a long-distance handicap chase.

A recurring theme in the Ladbrokes Trophy Handicap Chase is that proven stamina is anything but essential.

Clondaw Castle (2021), Master Dee (2018), Pilgrim Bay (2017), Opening Batsman (2013) and Nacarat (2009) had never previously run over 3m before taking the spoils, while Cap Du Nord (2022), Walt (2019), Theatre Guide (2016) and Bally Legend (2014) had never previously won over so far.

The flat terrain at the Sunbury venue favours the pace merchants, rather than the grinders, and that augurs well for Kdeux Saint Fray, a promising novice who will be having his first run beyond 2m 4f.

His latest staying-on fourth to Jordans Cross, his stablemate, in the Timeform Novices' Handicap Chase at Cheltenham needs marking up as he was not ideally positioned and got caught in a couple of pockets at the wrong time.

He had previously kept on well when runner-up to Guard The Moon at Aintree (that horse has won again and is now 11lb higher), having earlier won at Cheltenham. It’s all been positive with him and moving up to 3m could unlock more improvement.
