1.10 Kempton: Grenadier Jed
Grenadier Jed is one of perhaps a couple in this race who look to have significant potential upside in him and he may be the better value option.
Robert Walford’s six-year-old started his winning run off a basement mark of 82 last season and won three races very comfortably rising to a mark of 102.
He had a rare lapse when falling at Plumpton on his penultimate start but after being given a break he returned to form with a very good second to a Skelton stalwart at Chepstow last time.
This is by far the highest-grade race Grenadier Jed has raced in, but he is well worth the step up and off bottom weight can give some more exposed types a run for their money.
2.43 Newcastle: Fortunate Man
The Eider chase has long been a favourite handicap of mine and is often run in desperate conditions.
Conditions are a little easier and I think this looks a good opportunity for Fortunate Man to get back on the up after a slightly disappointing effort at Sandown last time. He had previously been a well-backed winner at Wetherby on Boxing Day.
At seven, Fortunate Man is comparatively young for an out and out stayer and the waiting tactics were probably overdone last time out and he can do better. Ritchie McClernon may be at the veteran stage but there are still not many better riders in a long-distance handicap chase.
3.35 Kempton: Katate Dori
Even though he is 11lb higher than when winning this corresponding race last season, I am taking Katate Dori to retain his crown.
He bolted up 12 months ago and thoroughly earned a hefty rise in the weights. After a slightly shaky start to this season, Sam Thomas got Katate Dori back on track with an excellent effort at Cheltenham last time out.
He was beaten just half a length and was rallying all the way to the line and I am hoping he can build further on that effort now before presumably heading on to the Festival.
4.05 Kempton: Loughderg Rocco
Has been off the track for a very long time but has joined Olly Murphy and has the champion jockey on board and in a very tight race he provides a different angle into this.
The market will reveal more but there is no doubt Loughderg Rocco has the form to make a big impact.
On only his second run over fences he beat a subsequent Cheltenham Festival winner by 12 lengths in impressive style. I doubt whether Murphy would run a horse unfit for this reappearance, but I have no idea if he retains any ability after such an absence. However, his form looks strong enough to take a chance.
