There is a midweek treat for racing fans to enjoy at
Warwick on
Wednesday and we’ve picked out five things you cannot afford to miss.
Jonbon returns after Aintree success (Focusonracing)
1. Jonbon’s debut over fences
A £570,000 purchase, a full-brother to Douvan and a Grade One winner over hurdles last term.
Jonbon is one of the most exciting horses in training and National Hunt fans will be
relishing his debut over fences.
Nicky Henderson’s stable star has only suffered only one defeat in six runs under Rules, when seeing the backside of stablemate Constitution Hill in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
But he was always bought with chasing in mind and this looks a good starting point. Currently a 7/2 chance for the Arkle in March, Wednesday’s contest looks sure to be informative as he takes on another Grade One winning hurdler in Paul Nicholls’ Monmiral, who bounced right back to form when second to Epatante in the Aintree Hurdle on his final start last term. West Cork, himself a Greatwood Hurdle winner, completes the triumvirate.
Lostintranslation is a former Betfair Chase winner (Focusonracing)
2. Veterans’ Chase to savour
The other highlight on the card is the
£30,000 Veterans’ Handicap Chase at 3.15pm. Twelve runners go to post, including top-weight Lostintranslation who three years ago was tasting Betfair Chase glory. De Rasher Counter is a former Coral Gold Cup winner, while the marvellous Snow Leopardess landed the Becher Chase last term before failing to fire in the
Grand National.
Throw into the mix former Graded winner Ramses De Teillee, the classy Cepage and Celebre D’Allen, a three-time winner last term, and this contest is certainly a race worth the admission fee alone.
3. Gitche Gumee on the up
stratford-on-avon
15:50 Stratford-on-Avon - Thursday October 27
Owned by JP McManus, the £65,000 purchase is a full-brother to the classy Chilli Filli and backed up a smart winning bumper debut at Kempton in March with a facile victory on hurdling bow at Stratford last month. King won this race on three successive occasions between 2015 and 2017, including with Yanworth, and the four-year-old will not be one to oppose lightly
in the novices' hurdle despite carrying a penalty.

18:20 Aintree - Saturday April 9
The £170,000 purchase Lookaway could certainly be another potential superstar on show - in the 1.45. The apple of trainer Neil King’s eye, Lookaway is unbeaten in two starts under Rules with his latest success being a decisive two-length win in a Graded bumper at Aintree’s Grand National Festival. The son of Ask took the breath away on that occasion, travelling into the race in the style of a hugely exciting individual. The form has already been boosted and he is one to follow.
5. Cobden and Nicholls – the dream team
Since the start of last month, Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden have combined with 61 runners and 28 have won, giving the Ditcheat duo a staggering 45% strike-rate. At the time of writing, the pair could better that record with four runners at Hereford on Tuesday afternoon before they roll into
Warwick.
The pair have two runners on Wednesday. The aforementioned
Monmiral is a fascinating contender up against Jonbon and is said to have schooled well at home. They will also be represented by Fame And Fun in the 1.15pm. He has yet to but, given the rampant form of Nicholls and Cobden, anything is possible.
