Trip to Ireland still the favoured option for Sukanya

Sukanya still appears more likely to take up her entry in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas than be supplemented for the Newmarket equivalent, although no final decision has been made.

The Jack Channon-trained filly came from last to first to win the Fred Darling at Newbury last weekend, beating the highly-touted Touleen in the process.

Owners Opulence Thoroughbreds sold one Group-winning filly in Royal Fixation over the winter, but look to have a ready-made replacement.

Edward Brown, racing and communications manager for the syndicate, said: “She was a big price when you actually looked at last year’s form. She was beaten three lengths behind Precise when she wasn’t disgraced and then second to Diamond Necklace in Leopardstown which was rock-solid form.

“She was going back to a track she won at on debut, so the signals were there.

“She needed to do some growing last year, both mentally and physically she was a bit immature, but full credit to Jack and the team, they gave her a fantastic winter break and before the race Jack said he couldn’t see her finishing out of the frame.

“His horses are in great form, he had a double on Lincoln day and while there were question marks regarding what trip she wanted, David (Probert) got off and said she’d have no trouble at a mile.

“She came from the back of the pack and showed a really good turn of foot. She is quite quirky, but she did everything right and looks a fantastic prospect.

“It was only our second Group winner and was a monumental day for the owners.”

He added: “We’ve had lots of discussions and we’ll take into account who is going where. She’s in the Irish Guineas, but would need supplementing for Newmarket. The Irish Guineas is probably favourite, but there are no firm decisions yet.

“I have to remind her owners, getting a horse like this doesn’t happen often and to be in races with the likes of Shadwell and Coolmore is exciting.”
