Our betting expert Dave Nevison is keen on a couple at Newbury and is sweet on another at Ffos Las.
2.13 Newbury: King Of The Lake
There is a terrific line up of conditional jockeys in what is a competitive race of its type and even though Chad Bament cannot claim the extra 3lb available - because he is riding for an outside yard - he could well follow up after he rode King Of The Lake to a wide margin win at Wincanton recently.
That was a red-letter day for the Jeremy Scott yard, who had been out of form. I am sure the young rider would have been conscious of the winning distance, but his mount went away effortlessly, so he could do little about the massive 26-length margin.
That run came after a second wind operation in a short space of time and emphatically it has worked. After he slogged through heavy ground last time, I don’t expect the tougher track at Newbury and similar conditions to be a concern.
4.55 Ffos Las: Luna De Castana
It will be a great surprise if this six-year-old mare doesn’t improve significantly now running in handicaps.
She was dropped to what is an unsuitably shaper trip last time and ran as could be expected.
Before that, she had been beaten only seventh lengths into fifth place over 19f at Warwick, when doing all her best work late on.
Now in a basement level handicap over a furlong further, she can start to show her true colours.
5.05 Newbury: Gamesters Guy
After being found out in Graded company last time, Gamesters Guy looks ready for a step down to handicap company as well as this step up half a mile in trip.
His second place finish at Bangor and subsequent win by a wide margin win at Carlisle are both strong form for the grade with a couple of next-time-out winners well adrift last time.
He powered along on the bridle for most of the race at Carlisle and I am sure the extra four furlongs will bring about improvement. He is by Black Sam Bellamy, whose progeny excel over long distances and his dam is a hurdles’ winner, which is enough to convince me this is what he needs.
He's got 12st to carry for his handicap debut but he looks fairly weighted.
