Top tipster Martin Dixon takes aim at the action at Haydock and Nottingham on Saturday, with both meetings live on Racing TV. 2.30 Haydock: Barbury Boy
No prizes for originality here, but the dogs couldn't have been barking any louder ahead of Barbury Boy's handicap debut at Beverley last month and he duly justified strong market support, pulling clear with an easy subsequent winner in Alice De Clare.
A good-looking gelding with strong middle-distance blood, he ought to relish this extra step up in distance and strikes me as a three-year-old that will stay ahead of the handicapper for a good while yet.
3.05 Haydock: Jeddaal
This is a hot race, but I like the set-up of it for Jeddaal, who clocked a fast time when making a successful return at Catterick last month.
I prefer lower-to-middle draws over this course and distance, and stall five should ensure he gets a good position in behind what is likely to be an end-to-end gallop with the likes of Silver State and Sea The Power in the field.
I noted him as a likely improver when stepped up to a mile even as a two-year-old at Doncaster and he again gave that impression last time, while I think Ashley Lewis is good-value for his 5lb claim.
3.40 Haydock: Myal (E/W)
I hope this isn't a heart-ruling-head moment because Myal is one of my favourite horses in training having got behind him quite early when his progress started as a three-year-old, but he's barely stopped improving since and is tremendously tough and likeable.
At Thirsk last time, he outbattled the classy Poet Master who re-opposes, posting a career-best figure in the process. Given that he's well drawn in stall two here and has a flawless 3-3 course record, I expect a good run again and am happy to have a small each-way bet at odds of 8-1 at the time of writing.
4.00 Nottingham: DC Cogent
Bryan Smart's sprinter has admittedly been expensive to follow over the last twelve months, but he rarely runs a poor race and is undoubtedly well treated when things go right.
His problem has all too often been that he doesn't settle well enough, but my thinking here is that having such a free-going front runner as Westgate Warrior drawn right next to him will be a big help and allow him to get into a smoother rhythm.
His last few runs have all produced subsequent winners, so the form is solid and his mark is gradually sliding.
