Karl Burke keen on tilt at Fillies' Mile at Newmarket with Laurens

Karl Burke is set to try and scoop another significant two-year-old prize with Laurens in the bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on October 13.
Laurens dug deep to land the Group Two May Hill Stakes at Doncaster last week, in the process giving her Middleham-based trainer a fourth top juvenile prize this year after the earlier exploits of Havana Grey (Molecomb) and Unfortunately (Prix Ropert Papin and Prix Morny).
“We are pretty keen to run Laurens in the Fillies’ Mile but it will all depend on how she’s performing at the time, she has to be in top form,” Burke said. “It is probably 70-30 in favour of her running at the moment.
“I am 100 per cent happy with how she has come out of the May Hill but she is just having a quiet week at the moment, then we will start building her up again.”
Laurens battled on gamely in the May Hill to beat Dark Rose Angel by a head with two other Fillies’ Mile entries, Nyaleti and Sizzling, just a head and a neck back in third and fourth.
“It was a great performance by her in the May Hill as she won it despite the way the race was run,” Burke said. “We wanted a good gallop for her, but instead there was a slow pace and she did very well to get her head in front.
“She is more of a long term project than her Group-winning stablemates, she is a huge filly – in fact she was huge as a yearling – and she was always going to be a three-year-old type.
“That’s why we have taken our time with her and only given her three runs. I’m pretty sure that she can take one more but we don’t want to force her. She will be a mile and a quarter or even a mile and a half filly next season.”
Laurens is among 30 to stand their ground for the £500,000 Fillies’ Mile, with ten of those trained by Aidan O’Brien.

The champion trainer’s pack include the 1-2 from the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes, Happily and Magical, plus Clemmie, winner of the Group Two Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket in July.
Soustraction and Efaadah could fly the flag for France. This pair have met on each of their two career outings, Efaadah beating Soustraction into second in a Deauville maiden before the positions were reversed in the Group Three Prix d’Aumale at Chantilly.
Meanwhile, the Jersemy Noseda-trained Betty F, a possible for the £200,000 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes on September 30, will gallop at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse on Thursday.
In the company of two lead horses, Betty F, a daughter of Frankel, will be ridden by Frankie Dettori and work over five and a half furlongs, commencing at 9am.
Betty F was a comfortable winner of her only start to date, at Newmarket late last month.
