Although she didn’t win when I put her up last time (and having been very well backed), I definitely didn’t cross Zouzanna off my list of horses to be with over the closing days of the turf season.
The Charltons-trained three-year-old ran a more than respectable third in a race very similar to this, staying on very nicely over seven furlongs and looking very much to me as though she was now ready to go back up to a mile.
She won over a mile at Haydock back in May so there will be no issues at all over the trip. Zouzanna is up against some lightly-raced and progressive types but they will definitely have to go some to beat her while she is in top form.
Stuart Kittow has really hit form after a quiet summer and this gelding very much looks to have benefited from a mid-season break. He ran a decent second over course and distance in September and then went to Lingfield and won nicely.
Yes, he has gone up 6lb for that latest success, but it's a far from insurmountable rise given the ease of his latest success, and Rob Hornby, who has been on board for both his wins so far, keeps the ride again here.
This is a really competitive handicap for the grade, but Royal Scandal looks an ideal candidate now that she steps up significantly in trip here.
She is by Dubawi out of a classy Authorized mare, who stayed this trip, and has produced other stayers. Indeed, Royal Scandal looks just the late-maturing sort of horse James Fanshawe does so well with, having not made her debut until three.
An unusual debut winner for the yard she looked as though she was going places, but although that has stalled slightly, she has improved with each run this season and this step up to two miles looks a strong move. The Fanshawe/Muscutt combo has been very potent this season.
