Top tipster and pundit Dave Nevison has three best bets on the first day of the Betfred St Leger meeting at Doncaster, including one at a big price in the concluding handicap.
1.50 Doncaster: Calendar Girl
Owen Burrows is having a great time, especially with his two-year-olds this season, and has a solid chance of landing this valuable event with a relatively cheaply bought filly.
Calendar Girl signalled she was a useful type when making a winning debut at Newbury at the end of July. She was 14-1 on that occasion and was probably expected to improve for the run but was impressive nonetheless.
It is easy to forgive her subsequent defeat when odds-on at Epsom as the winner got first run on her and Just Call Me Angel looks to be improving rapidly judged on her subsequent success.
This filly will very likely be suited to a return to a big galloping track and can continue her improvement.
3.35 Doncaster: Respond
This is a race packed with lightly0raced improvers and I have no doubt several winners this autumn will come from this handicap.
Respond has been steadily getting better throughout this season, gaining experience with each run and breaking his maiden in good style at Haydock last time out. That race has already had a winner come from it and Respond looks to have got in lightly making his handicap debut off a mark of 86.
The trip and track will certainly be ideal and, even though he is still a pound out of the weights here, he still looks well in and his light weight gives a great opportunity for Joe Fanning to ride a rare winner for the Balding yard.
5.15 Doncaster: Sea Legend
Jim Goldie has long been a supporter and nurturer of young talent and has definitely got a good one with Lauren Young. The stable is going well and Young claims a very valuable 7lb.
This gelding is very well suited by a fast-run race where he will be able to stay on from off the pace and he certainly looks to have that opportunity here.
He was running over way too short a trip over a mile last time and could never get close enough. I believe a return to just short of 12f may well be his ideal distance and, at massive odds, I am hopeful that he can stay on into a place at least.
