Will an O'Brien win the Betfred Derby?
Aidan has won it as a trainer a record eight times. Son Joseph won it twice as a jockey (Camelot and Australia). It has eluded Donnacha but in Alder, whose run in the Dee Stakes at Chester took my eye, he has a contender at a big price.
He was beaten after looking all over the winner, hanging quite badly for pressure. But he seems to have plenty of ability and it's an open Derby, isn't it? Bet365 offer 40-1.
Perhaps Joseph will strike in a cracking Navan feature on Saturday. Be lucky.
It was far from unusual that this horse was available at 9-2 in the morning of his debut at Limerick. He went off 11-8 favourite and won readily – quite unusual for a debutant from the Joseph O’Brien stable, whatever the market strength.
This is a son of Decorated Knight. He stands for relatively small money at the Irish National Stud but his progeny should certainly improve and this horse showed a great attitude on debut. He steps up to Listed company and this is asking a great deal, but I am more than happy to take a chance at the prices.
