Top tipster Dave Nevison has selections across Newbury and Newcastle on Saturday, including a 14-1 fancy in the Coral Gold Cup.
12.30 Newbury: Scarface
Scarface ran really well on his reappearance, but it definitely looked as though the extended three miles at Wincanton stretched his stamina up the straight.
He is dropped three furlongs for this iconic handicap, and it could prove ideal for the Joe Tizzard-trained eight-year-old. He may well come on for that effort, and is actually only 6lb higher than his convincing Newton Abbot win in April where both the second and third went on to win on their next outings.
The forecast heavy rain won’t be an issue, either, as that victory was in testing conditions, and
Scarface looks a solid option here.
2.55 Newbury: Victtorino
I backed Victtorino when he was sent off a leading fancy in this race last year, and I pretty much threw my each-way extra places slip in the fire before halfway!
Venetia Williams' charge was jumping very sloppily and was detached after a circuit plus looked almost certain to be pulled up. However, he seemed to finish like Dayjur, and somehow managed to snatch third!
It was a remarkable performance, and he proved his good form with wins in decent races on his next two starts. It might be that he is better suited by going right-handed over fences, but that can’t be so as he jumped the fences on the second circuit here last year perfectly.
I am therefore happy to give him another chance at winning this contest, with 14-1 available, at the time of writing, and I have long thought that few jockeys ride a soft-ground staying chase better than Charlie Deutsch.
If Victtorino is in a better mood at the start of the race this time, he will give this strong field plenty to think about.
3.15 Newcastle: Jasmin De Grugy
Jasmin De Grugy has been a winning machine for punters over the past couple of seasons, and may well go off favourite for this feature event.
He was clearly extremely well handicapped when he began his winning spree, and converted extremely well when switched to fences by winning his first two outings over larger obstacles.
I doubt this being his first run of the season will be an issue as he won first time out last season, and Anthony Honeyball is in flying form.
This trip and ground will be ideal, and Richie McLernon has been on board for all his wins so far.
3.35 Newbury: Rare Edition
This race looks set to be run at a furious gallop, given the number of habitual front-runners in the field, and Charlie Longsdon’s gelding could find himself ideally positioned sitting just off the contested pace.
Rare Edition attempted the impossible on his reappearance in trying to concede 20lb (including a 3lb claim) to Dan Skelton’s rapidly-improving Thistle Ask, who has scored twice since.
He got to within seven lengths of that rival after making a bad mistake early in the race, and it was a meritorious effort.
Being dropped a pound subsequently might look generous now, and he will need to be on his A game with his jumping, but things might work out well for Rare Edition here, so I'm siding with him.
