11.42 Newcastle: Gaelic Rover

Tipster: Martin Dixon.
Best odds: 5-1.
Gaelic Rover made a bright start to his rules career when third at Ayr this month, and I thought immediately afterwards that he could be worth backing to win a similar event next time.
He was a faller in both his starts in Irish points, but was in the process of being competitive before departing on each occasion, and his jumping was fine at Ayr where he moved up to look threatening at the second last before tiring after the final flight, shaping as though the outing was needed, to some extent.
I think that form is strong as he was beaten only by two rivals that had won bumpers, and it's already started to work out well, with the fourth home (Moon Phases) going close in a handicap chase next time out, and the sixth (Highland Fashion) subsequently winning a handicap hurdle.
Le Beau Madrik is initially priced as favourite for the Skelton's, but his bumper form is nothing flash, and I think he's more of a staying type, whilst Ballyeaston, who is also a leading fancy, didn't totally convince with his jumping on his hurdling debut.
At a best-priced 5-1, at the time of writing, Gaelic Rover looks good value.

1.19 Fairyhouse: Talk The Talk

Tipster: Johnny Ward.
Best odds: 4-1.
Johnny Ward: Talk Surely Goes Close

2.00 Newcastle: Constitution Hill

Tipster: Andy Stephens.
Best odds: 15-8.
Never mind there are only five entries, there are multiple layers of intrigue to this race. Maybe it is my heart ruling my head, but I cannot desert Constitution Hill given his back catalogue and effectiveness when fresh. The New Lion and Anzadam both arrive unbeaten and with the potential to soar higher, but I’m going to resist the shiny new things and put my trust in Henderson reviving the fortunes of the 2023 Champion Hurdle winner.  The trainer is seeking a record-extending tenth victory in this race.

2.55 Newbury: Spanish Harlem

Tipster: Matt Tombs.
Best odds: 12-1.
The Coral Gold Cup is usually run at a good gallop on a sound surface and favours prominently ridden horses - you need plenty of tactical speed to win. By contrast the Ultima, over 214 yards less but run on a stiffer track, has often been a real test of stamina. Horses ridden from off the pace have a strong record so perhaps the two races generally favour different types.
However, Myretown made all in the Ultima, a race where it had been hard to win from the front, (the previous winner to make most of the running was Unguided Missile in 1998.) Like Corach Rambler (fourth in the Coral Gold Cup off 7lb higher) and Un Temps Pour Tout (10th off 10lb higher), Myretown was a first season chaser when winning the Ultima. He’s 15lb higher here having bolted up by 11 lengths at Cheltenham.
He could make up into a Gold Cup horse, winning this on the way – but I wonder if connections are planning the Corach Rambler route of prioritising a repeat win in the Ultima en route to the Grand National
Some will be put off Spanish Harlem because he is 16lb higher than when winning the Kerry National but that form looks hot with Three Card Brag and French Dynamite winning big handicaps since. Willie Mullins’ Total Recall defied an 18lb rise for winning the Munster National eight years ago.

3.35 Newbury: Rare Edition

Tipster: Dave Nevison.
Best odds: 13-2.
This race looks set to be run at a furious gallop, given the number of habitual front-runners in the field, and Charlie Longsdon’s gelding could find himself ideally positioned sitting just off the contested pace.
Rare Edition attempted the impossible on his reappearance in trying to concede 20lb (including a 3lb claim) to Dan Skelton’s rapidly-improving Thistle Ask, who has scored twice since.
He got to within seven lengths of that rival after making a bad mistake early in the race, and it was a meritorious effort.
Being dropped a pound subsequently might look generous now, and he will need to be on his A game with his jumping, but things might work out well for Rare Edition here, so I'm siding with him.
