David Marnane is hoping exciting York winner Sirocco Sands can take his MRC International syndicate into the big time, with a return to the Kanvesmire next month on the agenda.
The Persian Force colt put his experience to good use in a valuable York novice race at the weekend, travelling powerfully before quickening clear to win in the style of a Pattern-race performer.
Marnane is considering taking his youngster to Cork before a tilt at the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes.
“We’ve always held him in high regard, but he really wants quick ground. He shows a lot of pace at home, but he’s a very relaxed horse, which is a good combination,” said Marnane.
“We were looking for some good ground on a nice track and they look after you so well at York, for a syndicate of owners it’s a great place to have runners, they enjoyed it so much we are actually running Hambelton there next week.
“It looked a good opportunity, it was a good pot and he won very easily, I couldn’t be happier.
“Time will tell, but the second looked a good yardstick. It was the way he did it and since he got home he has absolutely thrived.
“The plan is if he gets a mark under 90 there’s a race at Cork he can run in and if he runs well there then of course we’d like to go back to York for the Gimcrack.”
Marnane is heavily involved in the owning syndicate himself and is keen for it to continue to grow.
“We buy 20 yearlings every year, we are keen to race them, we then sell them at the end of their three-year-old career,” he said.
“We’ve had some great success in doing that, it’s been going five years now and we sold Jakajaro (for 200,000 guineas) so there are different facets to it.
“We’re going to be buying again, we’re taking in new members and more from the UK as they love coming over to Ireland and we love going over.
“We’re hoping to have a team for Dubai and we want it to be international.”
