Tipstar champion Katie Midwinter makes a case for four selections across Newmarket, and on Saturday.
2.10 Newmarket: Heart Of The City
The three-year-old Night Of Thunder filly, who fetched 265,000gns as a yearling, made a promising start on debut at
in June when a three-quarters-of-a-length second to odds-on favourite Tareefa, a winner since, who had the benefit of prior experience. Although she has been unable to build on that opening run in two starts since, the return to a sounder surface on turf could allow her to rediscover form, and she’s unexposed on handicap debut. From a mark of 77, with Pat Cosgrave back in the saddle for George Boughey, Heart Of The City is an intriguing contender in this mile contest.
3.00 Ayr: Town And Country
A first flat runner at Ayr for Henry de Bromhead, Earthlight filly Town And Country makes plenty of appeal on the back of a victory over useful Aidan O’Brien-trained colt Snapdragon and promising Jessica Harrington filly Saratoga Special at Navan. That was a significant improvement on her debut effort when seventh at Naas, although she struggled for a clear run at a crucial part of the race in the closing stages. A 160,000gns yearling, the half-sister to Group Three winner Romantic Style and Listed winner Are We Dreaming is capable of showing further progression for a yard worth keeping onside when sending their runners across the Irish Sea.
3.15 Newbury: Brian
Course-and-distance winner Brian came close to Group Three success in the Sirenia Stakes at Kempton recently, beaten only by three-quarters-of-a-length from winner Symbol Of Strength, who reopposes, having been forced to make up plenty of ground in the straight. He is capable of landing a race at this level, having previously been narrowly denied by subsequent Gimcrack Stakes winner Cool Hoof Luke in a Chelmsford maiden before finishing third in the Chesham Stakes. A convincing winner of a Newmarket Auction on his penultimate start, Brian makes plenty of each-way appeal at double-figure odds, and could spring a small surprise in this Group Two.
5.15 Ayr: Euchen Glen
Popular veteran Euchen Glen makes his 77th career start for Jim Goldie in this 1m5f contest. The course-and-distance winner has shown he still retains plenty of ability as an eleven-year-old this term, recording a fifth career win at the track in June before finishing sixth in the John Smith’s Cup at York and achieving fourth in a competitive Goodwood handicap. Only 3lbs higher than his most recent win, the likeable gelding, who has form figures of
at the track, is on a mark of 91 from which he can win, given he was only denied by a head at this meeting last year when rated 96. He is capable of recording another victory and, in familiar surroundings here, the stars could align for another special success under regular rider Paul Mulrennan.
