On The Wire: Irish Champions Festival preview

Essential viewing: Our On The Wire team preview the Irish Champions Festival and share their top tips for Leopardstown and the Curragh

2.15 Leopardstown: Diego Velazquez

Tipster: Johnny Ward.
Best odds: 2-1.
I've got three selections for Leopardstown on Saturday, day one of the Irish Champions Festival, and I can't wait for the weekend. Make sure you also watch On The Wire, in association with Boylesports, on Racing TV's YouTube page for more top tips for Leopardstown and the Curragh.
I'm surprised Diego Velazquez is chalked up at 2-1 for the Tonybet Solonaway Stakes. His performance last time out, when beating a very smart horse of Dermot Weld's, who won at the Curragh next time out, was just marvellous.
He finished with an unbelievable burst to score and bounced back to something like the potential and ability he hinted at during the early stages of his career.
I struggle to see any of these beating him, even though this is a tougher race, and he's a big, big player. He should be shorter that 2-1.

2.50 Leopardstown: Ylang Ylang

Tipster: Katie Midwinter.
Best odds: 6-1.
A 1,500,000gns purchase as a yearling, Frankel filly Ylang Ylang has shown a good level of form, including winning the Fillies’ Mile last season and being beaten by only a length when fifth in the 1000 Guineas.
The ground had dried out too much for her to have a significant impact at Newmarket, but she stayed on well to the line to finish within hailing distance of Porta Fortuna.
Ylan Ylang can reverse the form on slightly softer conditions here after two below par efforts. She was reported to have suffered an injury in the Oaks on her penultimate start, and probably needed the run when last seen. She can bounce back here.

3.25 Leopardstown: Economics

Tipster: Andy Stephens.
Best odds: 11-8.
Aidan O’Brien usually finds a way to win this race but all his candidates seem to have his chinks and, in Economics, they face a colt of huge potential.
The score between Ireland and challengers from elsewhere in the world is 24/24, and he can tip the scales back in favour of the raiders. Ghostwriter looks a big price to make the frame.

3.40 Doncaster: Illinois

Tipster: Andy Stephens.
Best odds: 2-1.
The final Classic of the year revolves around the O’Brien trio, who all look stout stayers but have such different profiles.
Catch-me-if-you-can tactics again look on the cards for front-running Grosvenor Square and then you’ve got Illinois, who has had a textbook build-up, and raw new kid on the block Jan Brueghel.
The most solid, for my money, is Illinois, which is reflected by the betting. It’s impossible to see him not running his race.
The two previous Group One winners in the race are in the home team in the shape of Sunway and You Got To Me. But neither are guaranteed to stay.

5.25 Doncaster: Native Warrior

Tipster: Dave Nevison.
Best odds: 11-2.
Native Warrior was first home on his side in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot and then finished an excellent second at Goodwood (behind Paradias) last time out.
He missed York's Sky Bet Ebor Festival having been a late non-runner in the race won by Treasure Time (Native Warrior was set to have a potentially bad draw in the big field where the first three home were drawn in single figures).
He certainly looks like a three-year-old who has at least one big handicap in him before possibly being elevated to higher grade races eventually.
Karl Burke’s charge has fared much better with the draw on this occasion and on this straightforward track, I fully expect a good run. With Treasure Time now having gone up 7lb for his win last time, Native Warrior has to be the selection.
