The Racing TV cameras will capture the action at Taunton and Navan on Monday. Ross Millar signed off the Cheltenham Festival by tipping the final winner of the meeting Iroko (advised at 12-1) and has three selections for the new week.
3.15 Taunton: Doctor Ken
Olly Murphy wasn’t able to land a winner at Cheltenham last week, but did strike with a number of victories elsewhere. He continues to have his string in good heart with solid 17% winners to runners.
Doctor Ken hasn’t been seen on the course since November but that absence isn’t a concern as he has already demonstrated he’s capable of running well when fresh, when winning on his seasonal return at Aintree.
That win came over a trip of 2m4f and he finished powerfully, as he did when finishing second at Ayr on his next start.
This step up in trip looks sure to suit and the sharp nature of this track will also be ideal for this strong travelling gelding who has looked an assured jumper in both chase starts.
He has good form on right-handed tracks - winning at both Ascot and Market Rasen – and, while his mark of 130 doesn’t look lenient, I’m fully expecting him to take his form to another level now facing three miles.
3.45 Taunton: JPR One
taunton
13:00 Taunton - Monday January 10
This represents a belated return for JPR One and I’m sure novice chasing would have been the plan if connections had been able to get him to the track earlier in the season.
The Joe Tizzard-trained gelding showed good form in novice hurdles last season; winning at Exeter and here at Taunton with those victories sandwiching a fine run in a grade three at Cheltenham where he was only narrowly beaten by the high-class Datsalrightgino.
His season ended on a downward curve with disappointing runs in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury and the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham, though it’s possible connections had set their sights too high.
He lines up here off a mark of just 127 having been dropped 4lb from the mark he was originally assessed at. I believe he comfortably has the most compelling hurdle form in the field and has already shown an ability to handle this track.
The form of his yard is a mild concern, though they did strike with a ready winner at Fontwell on Saturday. I expect him to win this in style before taking on bigger challenges this spring.
5.05 Southwell: Walk In The Storm
Walk In The Storm first went into my notebook at Uttoxeter after finishing fourth in a mares’ novice hurdle over two miles. She had been well supported in the market but found the pace over that trip to be too hot to handle.
I felt that the extra half-mile she faced at Ffos Las on her handicap debut would see her defy an opening mark of 83. She ran well to finish second, behind a resurgent winner, but again was off the bridle early before finishing to great effect.
The 2lb raise she received from the handicapper shouldn’t prevent her from finally shedding her maiden tag now that she steps up in trip once more.
