11.45 Haydock: Super Freddie
Super Freddie is one of a few in this competitive conditionals' handicap who might be leniently-treated at this stage and it could be a race to keep a close eye on for future winners.
He is making his handicap debut after two placed efforts this season where he has jumped a little novicey, but also not had the best of luck in running. Last time out, he was carried right three out and lost valuable ground at the crucial part of the race.
He stayed on nicely to get back up for third place, but he looks every inch a future stayer (dam is by Gold Cup winner Kayf Tara) and going up three furlongs in trip for this seems certain to bring about improvement.
12.55 Haydock: Cobbler's Boy
Dan Skelton looks to have another lightly-raced potential improver on his hands with this five-year-old who bolted up in an early season maiden hurdle at Warwick when we last saw him in May. His handicap mark of 119 is based on the strength of a very promising debut in an above average event for that track.
Backing unexposed Skelton runners is definitely not for value seekers, but it is hard to work out just how much improvement some of the yards runners have in them and this one could definitely have quite a bit up his sleeve.
Tristan Durrell has really come of age this season and it is no drawback having him taking over from Harry Skelton, who is at Ascot. With the yard in such form, I do not have much concern about his fitness after an absence.
2.05 Haydock: Grande Geste
Grand Geste is becoming a very frustrating maiden over hurdles, and now over fences too, especially those who backed him last time when he got beat by a nose after going off 5-4 favourite.
It might be brave to go on a recovery mission in a race such as the Tommy Whittle where he is 2lb out of the handicap and 7lb higher than when beaten last time, but I think it is a chance worth taken.
Haydock is a track that the Sue Smith/Joel Parkinson chasers excel and Grand Geste actually ran one of his best races over hurdles when second in a three-mile novice event here last season.
His last run was only his second race over fences and he should still have improvement in him. I expect a good run.
3.00 Ascot: Deep Cave
Deep Cave seemed to take a while to acclimatise when joining Christian Williams from France for last season, but he ended up winning a seriously competitive handicap hurdle at the
Grand National meeting in April.
He was winning chases and running at Listed level over fences in France, so it was no real surprise to see him win a decent handicap at Bangor on his reappearance.
He has been raised just 4lb for that success and, now that he has hit top form for Williams, I expect more staying handicaps to come his way given the trainer's ability to place this type of horse very well.
