Star columnist Lydia Hislop studies how the novice chasers fared over the festive period (covering races between December 26-29). She reckons the bookmakers have over-reacted in pushing out an Arkle aspirant to 25-1 after a defeat at Leopardstown.
Read her thoughts about the rest of the chasing division here. Columns about the hurdlers in action over Christmas and then a New Year update will follow later this week. Enjoy the latest edition of the Road To Cheltenham show - live from Leopardstown
Novice chasers
A combination of a change of tactics for Saint Roi and a jolting error at the third last from Fil Dor saw their mutual chase-debut form comprehensively reversed in the Grade One Brand New Racing Post App Novice Chase at Leopardstown on St Stephen’s Day.
Then four-year-old Fil Dor had beaten his elder rival by four lengths at Navan in November, when the latter had made the running until headed two out. Here, Mark Walsh watched on from last on Saint Roi, only producing a challenge approaching the last. However, the winner had also earlier been shuffled back by Fil Dor’s mistake.
Jack Kennedy responded to the error by immediately trying to drive the younger horse back into the race, meaning they were again pitching for the lead from two out until fading after the last. Ruby Walsh made the point in the latest Road To Cheltenham show that in not giving Fil Dor time to recover from his mistake, Kennedy had nothing left to work with late on. He ran far better than a near-ten-length third would suggest and odds of 25/1 with Unibet are an over-reaction, albeit his weight-for-age allowance will now start to drain away.
Splitting that pair in second was the Peter Fahey-trained Visionarian, who is clearly a different gear over fences compared with hurdles and continues to progress. He jumped intelligently here and was still beaten, however, suggesting he will struggle to make an impact at the very top over two miles. A step back up in trip would help, though, and he shouldn’t be underestimated.
Back in fourth and beaten 12 lengths, Hollow Games got outpaced from three out and that caused him to make a mistake two out. Unsurprisingly given his hurdling exploits, he needs a marked step up in trip. Second-season novice Midnight Run seemed exposed as not quite this level with a scrappy round of jumping. However, he might not be as effective left-handed and could prove over-priced in a suitable contest when returned to a right-handed track.
Saint Roi didn’t adjust right as much as he had done at Navan, but that preference was still apparent here. It may have contributed to him being more deliberate and slower back into stride on landing than is desirable for the Arkle. Despite this Grade One success and a more-than-creditable back catalogue over hurdles, at 16/1 Saint Roi still trades at longer than more feted stablemates El Fabiolo, Dysart Dynamo (of whom more in a moment), Appreciate It and Sir Gerhard. The last-named is yet to jump a fence in battle and has suffered a setback.
In the following race over the same course and distance, the novice Final Orders continued his rapid progress by winning a competitive and well-run handicap from what was in effect an 11lbs higher mark (with jockey Keith Donoghue putting up 2lb overweight). Bar for getting in tight to the fourth, he jumped accurately even when under pressure in the closing stages. He finished with less to give than Saint Roi, having initiated the stronger pace in the second half of the race compared with the Grade One.
Winning trainer Gavin Cromwell mentioned a further handicap target but he might soon have to consider graded company – unless he likes the look of a temptingly low mark over hurdles, natch. “Final Orders has been a revelation since he went chasing,” Cromwell told the Racing Post. “He’s only a small horse but loves jumping. He needs every yard of three miles over hurdles and but his jumping is so good over fences that he can operate at this trip.”
Dysart Dynamo makes short work of the opposition on his chasing bow
The following day, Dysart Dynamo faced three inferior rivals for his chase debut and brushed them aside before the second fence. The good news for his future in this discipline was both the soundness of his jumping and the relative self-containment with which he raced – in contrast to his hurdling exploits, typified by his tearaway performance in the Supreme.
That exuberance ended in disaster with a heavy, plunging fall three out just as Jonbon joined him on the lead, and was succeeded by an unnervingly tame effort in Punchestown’s Champion Novice in which he raced freely alone in front but quickly surrendered it with a whimper three out.
It was therefore reassuring to see him at Leopardstown, both at all – given it was no doubt later than trainer Willie Mullins would have preferred – and in focussed mood. After haring off initially, by the third Townend was able to slow him down to something more befitting an Arkle prospect.
This was the second start over fences for Irascible and Sea Ducor, neither of whom made much impact on debut. Having tried to keep within the same parish as the winner early on, the former ultimately outstayed the latter from the last, after appearing booked for third. Slip Of The Tongue, the fourth member of this mismatched quartet, got no further than the third fence when already detached from the action.
Back in Britain, Boothill paid a major compliment to his comfortable Henry VIII conqueror Jonbon with an authoritative Grade Two success over the game and likeable Aucunrisque in Kempton’s Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase. Whilst these novices didn’t set off as if their tails were on fire, like Editeur Du Gite over the same course and distance 70 minutes later, they didn’t hang about either – resulting in a time about a second quicker overall than the open Grade Two, achieved by pacing it more efficiently.
Aucunrisque made the running from the second fence, with favourite Lac De Constance kept in a prominent pitch on the outside. However, the latter – previously a 20-length winner in a 3-runner race at Kempton following an unbeaten but shallow three-race hurdles career – clearly found the solid pace too hot with underfoot conditions less testing than he would have preferred.
Remind yourself of how Jonbon thumped Boothill
He was being niggled along from an early stage and the effect of being on the stretch was to stutter into the fifth and reach for the eighth when trying to stay in the game. He also went long at the next but changed his mind on take-off, causing him to crash through the ninth obstacle and unseat Harry Skelton. He needs slower collective circumstances.
Last season’s Betfair Hurdle winner and Champion Hurdle fifth Glory And Fortune will surely be returned to the smaller obstacles, his second attempt at a chasing career as much of a debacle as his first. He was irritable from the get-go and chucked himself over his fences. The final indignity was a blunder four out, prior to grudging completion 35 lengths behind Boothill.
Despite the race developing into a match, the principals are both substantial chasers. Aucunrisque had previously failed by only two-and-a-quarter lengths to concede 10lbs to Lac De Constance’s stablemate Frere D’Armes at Newbury and stepped up on that performance here. He jumps well and answered every ask, over obstacles and on the flat, from Tom Cannon but could never quite get away from Boothill.
Jonathan Burke rode the winner confidently, conspicuously delaying his challenge until well inside the straight. He might have found Aucunrisque put up more of a fight than he expected, however, and only got upsides after switching to the inner at the final fence.
The winner is building a highly professional profile over fences that should stand him in good stead when moving into top handicap company this season or next. It might be that his connections have more ambitious plans in the short-term, however, with Burke expressing a desire to “have another crack at Jonbon”.
“Are you going to beat him?” Burke asked, rhetorically. “Probably not but we’ll give it another go, I’d say.” Trainer Harry Fry is a sensible chap, however, and will surely target the Grand Annual rather than add ballast to the Arkle. Boothill possesses the ideal profile for that project.
As well as acknowledging the further substance this result grants to Jonbon’s profile – confirming his Sandown success as the best novice-chasing form so far seen this season – it’s worth bearing So Scottish in mind. He was a good second to Boothill at Ascot in November, not beaten far and shaping as though needing a step back up in trip from two miles. He hasn’t raced since for shrewd operator Emmet Mullins.
Thyme Hill lands the Kauto Star
The previous day at Kempton, Thyme Hill got his Grade One stripes over fences in a shoddy edition of the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase. It wasn’t the innate quality of the constituent field that made the race so shaky from a form perspective but rather a slothful pace, their lack of collective experience and a mass outbreak of poor jumping, among other issues.
Thyme Hill had not taken to fences in two starts to date, despite winning on debut at Exeter and finishing second to McFabulous in a Newbury Grade Two in November. He had jumped carefully, airily or sketchily at most obstacles previously, particularly at a ditch, so trainer Philip Hobbs enlisted cheekpieces at Kempton to focus his mind. This undoubtedly worked to some degree.
However, the extent to which this success represented improvement has, I think, been greatly exaggerated. A positive view of the form requires closing your eyes at all 18 fences and to ignore the glacial time.
The rot started when Galia Des Liteaux stood off absurdly far from the second fence (the same obstacle that confounded others at Kempton's Christmas meeting) and breasted it. Thereafter, this smart mare – a nine-length winner of a Listed contest at Bangor on chase debut – was decidedly spooked. Ballooning the third, guessing at the fifth to the degree that she landed on it and slowing into the 14th, it was remarkable she lasted as long as she did. Rider Harry Skelton pulled her up before four out.
It was there that Gelino Bello tried and failed to hurdle the fence, falling under Bryony Frost, having earlier barely taken off at the third. He’d won both previous chase starts, but beaten a sum total of three rivals. He’d also jumped right at both Wetherby and Exeter, so it’s possible he didn’t enjoy being positioned hard up the inside and needed more room to manoeuvre on take-off.
Mortlach, a comparatively experienced novice who ultimately finished tailed off in third, jumped erratically but briefly tried to pressurise leader McFabulous before the 13th when the tempo increased. (Relative term.) That attempt had already petered out when he made a mistake three out. Mortlach subsequently chased home Stage Star in a one-sided match at Plumpton on Monday – his 11th outing already over fences.
McFabulous was prominent early and took over front-running duties at an ever-more-funereal pace from the fifth. He’d braked into the bogey second fence and dragged his hind legs through it second time around, also jumping left at times. Stalked by Thyme Hill into the straight, he tamely relinquished the lead approaching two out. An explanation was subsequently forthcoming, however, as the BHA’s veterinary officer reported he had finished lame.
It's in that context that Thyme Hill – an undoubtedly high-class hurdler, who’s hit the frame in three Festivals and is a dual Grade One winner in that discipline – recorded his 15-length success. After some deliberate jumping on the first circuit, he did warm up as the race developed but he won’t be granted that luxury in races such as the Brown Advisory.
Gelino Bello had dispensed with Loughderg Rocco at Wetherby on their mutual chase debut but the latter put up a fight to be beaten only half a length. Ridden positively over 2m4f by Adam Wedge at Leicester on Wednesday, the runner-up thumped the Skelton-trained odds-on favourite Unexpected Party – who had himself previously chased home both McFabulous and Jonbon at more respectful distances.
Winning trainer Laura Morgan declared that the likeable winner – wince – heads straight to Cheltenham for the Brown Advisory, which might well be connected with avoiding deep winter ground but does seem a waste of Loughderg Rocco’s novice season. He is progressive but would need to find a great deal of further improvement to figure, even in an open year.
At the same Newbury meeting that McFabulous beat Thyme Hill,
Balco Coastal made his chase debut. As noted in
column four, he appeared to lose confidence after a first-fence error and jumped scrappily, but was not beaten as far as you would expect. He duly put that experience to good use when winning Kempton’s novices’ limited handicap on Boxing Day, upped to a more suitable trip of 2m4f.
Kept resolutely to the wide outside by Nico de Boinville, he jumped soundly but adjusted left at most fences and made light work of an unchanged mark of 133, handing out a nine-length defeat to second-season novice, Solo. A step up in grade will soon follow, perhaps returning here in February for the Grade Two Pendil Novices’ Chase.
The mare Panic Attack kept on stoutly for third, signalling that a return to three miles would be helpful. Having jumped savagely right on both chase starts to date at Warwick, the market expected West Cork to do much better here but he jumped poorly and struggled to hold his position from a long way out prior to pulling up.
At Limerick that same day, Gerri Colombe maintained his unbeaten record when winning the Grade One Faugheen Novice Chase in the style of a stayer and providing upwardly mobile young jockey Jordan Gainford with his first Grade One success in Ireland.
It followed his American triumph at that level on Hewick for Shark Hanlon in April and was swiftly succeeded the next day by a Grade Two victory over hurdles for Gerri Colombe’s trainer Gordon Elliott on Favori De Champdou.
Gainford – who will deservedly receive bigger and better assignments from Elliott following the retirement of Davy Russell – utilised his mount’s stamina, pressing long-time leader Authorized Art from four out and making the first move in the straight. That meant even though the winner got in tight to both the final two obstacles, he held the critical advantage of track position.
Runner-up Adamantly Chosen was patiently ridden by Brian Hayes, having shaped quite well behind Mighty Potter in the Drinmore previously, but he could never quite threaten. He was also checked on landing when Gerri Colombe adjusted left at the last. Elliott mentioned the National Hunt Chase for the winner but indicated soft ground would be required, even at 3m 6f.
Third-placed Kilcruit was disappointing, failing to build on his encouraging chase-debut success at Punchestown with a flat and scruffy effort. It’s still early days but the much-acclaimed 2021 Festival Bumper runner-up to Sir Gerhard is threatening to be as underwhelming over fences as he was over hurdles.
Three days later at Leopardstown, decent second-season novice Gaillard Du Mesnil finally got off the mark over fences in an ugly edition of the Neville Hotels Novice Chase. Sadly, both Three Stripe Life and Unexpected Depth were fatally injured – the former when falling two out and the latter when breaking down on the flat.
The winner is habitually slow to find his stride on landing and therefore unlikely to add to his Grade One tally unless encountering another race as unfortunate as this one. However, he never looked like falling and warmed up as the race continued, meaning he can certainly be a factor in top-flight marathon handicaps.
Allegorie De Vassy and Sean O
He followed up third to L’Homme Presse in last term’s Brown Advisory with the same spot in the Irish
Grand National. The latter race is his obvious ultimate target this season, via the Festival’s National Hunt Chase – for which he boasts the ideal profile and has traded as favourite since that book opened. He’s now 2/1 best with Coral alone. The ante-post favourite for three of the other six races on Day One at Cheltenham are now 6/4 or shorter, of which two are odds-on.
Philosophically speaking, a Grade One winner shouldn’t be able to contest a Grade Two race unpenalised, thus discouraging him from again contesting the Brown Advisory as he ought. It’s a meeting that’s supposed to pitch the best against the best but has been diluted to such a degree that such platitudes ceased to resonate many seasons ago. That race condition should be amended accordingly for 2024, however, to make better of a bad job.
More fundamental reimagining of the Jumps Pattern sadly appears to be for the birds, unless the much-vaunted New Industry Strategy engenders a sudden appetite for tackling longstanding thorny issues. I’ll wait.
Back to the Neville Hotels Novice Chase. Runner-up Churchstonewarrior, who alone raced towards the inside, produced his best effort yet by vying for the lead until headed by the winner at the second last. Distant third Frontal Assault adjusted persistently right and will be of interest when returned to a right-handed track in handicap company – he finished one place ahead of Gaillard Du Mesnil in the Irish Grand National and remains on a feasible mark.
Amirite was taken out of the race in unusual circumstances when rider Rachael Blackmore was in effect pushed out of the saddle by Jack Kennedy, who was scrabbling to regain his balance after his ill-fated mount Three Stripe Life jumped right and collided with that rival at the 11th fence. Amirite was travelling perfectly well at the time but it was a long way out.
The previous day, Gentlemansgame downed I Am Maximus in a raggedy edition of the 2m5f beginners’ chase at Leopardstown. Wearing the cheekpieces that extracted two decent efforts over hurdles at the backend of last season, including third behind Klassical Dream in a Grade One over three miles at the Punchestown Festival, he was more straightforward than the odds-on favourite.
I Am Maximus had thrown his chase debut away by jumping persistently left behind Minella Crooner in an underwhelming event at Fairyhouse last time out – a habit he had also displayed when trained in Britain over hurdles by Nicky Henderson. Unnervingly, new trainer Willie Mullins had applied cheekpieces alongside a switch to a left-handed track and it was soon clear why.
When he went to the front at the third, I Am Maximus immediately burrowed into the left-hand corner – as commentator Jerry Hannon noted in-running – and continued to jump erratically until headed at the fifth. Largy Debut went to the front at that point – a fence at which both Grand Roi and Freedom To Dream made chance-ending errors – and that enabled I Am Maximus to prove more tractable in behind.
Largy Debut soon began jumping right, however, and was harried by Gentlemansgame from after four out until stopping quickly entering the straight. The winner led against the inside rail around the home turn and was firmly chased along by Darragh O’Keeffe approaching the last. I Am Maximus seemed to be going better, with a sweeping outer challenge, but it was inevitable he would drift left at the last and that was enough to seal his fate. He looks tricky.
At Limerick that same day, stable companion Allegorie De Vassy made a winning debut over fences in the Grade Two Dawn Run Mares Novice Chase. Having hitherto jumped well, her keenness taking her to the front from the second fence, her only danger came from the last two obstacles. She made a complete hash of two out, but never looked like falling, and then scrambled over the last for a 19-length defeat of the vastly more experienced Malina Girl.
Built to do better as a chaser, the winner was clipped into 5/2 best for the Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase – a position she had held in the market even before jumping a fence competitively. This was trainer Willie Mullins’ sixth success in this race and this winner looks to have the potential of smart 2015 model Vroum Vroum Mag, also owned by Rich and Susannah Ricci.
Finally, at Wincanton on Boxing Day, Tweed Skirt made it two from two over fences with a substantial performance in the mares’ novices’ limited handicap chase.
Taking the lead after four out from Eureka Creek – who jumped persistently left and slipped badly on the home turn – the winner jumped all three fences in the straight particularly well, including when asked for a bold one by James Bowen at the second last. Recent Fontwell winner Kissesforkatie gave game chase but could never quite reach her younger rival.
Tweed Skirt’s hurdling career was thwarted by breathing issues, but she has taken to fences particularly well. Wearing a first-time tongue-tie and returning from a second bout of wind surgery, she had triumphed smoothly on chase debut in a one-sided contest at Kempton. This was deeper and represents decent enough form for the grade.

Clifford Lee celebrated his first victory since returning to race riding aboard Al Qareem in the Virgin Bet Goliath Cup Stakes at Musselburgh. Lee suffered a motorcycle accident in October that left him in intensive care with serious neck injuries, but following a winter of recovery he returned to the saddle on Marshman at Newcastle on Good Friday.Al Qareem dug deep to get up on the line to win the Listed event, with the 5-4 favourite holding off Mount Atlas by half a length to help Karl Burke and owners Nick Bradley Racing secure a double.
