Racing reacts on social media to Kempton closure proposals

Tue 10 Jan 2017

How racing reacted to news that Kempton Park, home of the King George VI Chase, could close by 2021 "at the earliest".

Archie Watson, trainer - @Archie_Watson

"Very sad to read of plans to close Kempton. Early memories of going to see Best Mate win King George and trained my own first winner there. Surely Newmarket doesn't need a third racecourse. Especially with Chelmsford City just down the road!"

Stuart Williams, trainer -@WilliamsStuart

"It would make great sense to have an AW track where so many flat horses are based."

Donald McCain, trainer -@donaldmccain

"So in case anyone's missed it, that's another jumps track gone! #kempton."

Lizzie Kelly, jockey - ‏@LizDKelly

"This is really really s**t."

Simon Munir, owner - ‏@LordElstree

"So sad Kempton Park is being closed - many of my first boyhood racing memories were at Kempton Park."

David Stevens, head of PR at Coral - @Pompey_Dave

"Realise not JCR track but would love to see the King George at Ascot, 30,000 there on Boxing day, would be fantastic and fitting venue."

Mike Spence, owner -@mikespence8

"Please don't do this to me..."

Brendan Powell, trainer - @bpowell13

"Such a shame re @kemptonparkrace. Trained my first winner there. Lovely jumps track and best aw surface. 3 courses @NewmarketRace then! shame."

Dave Lowe, owner-breeder - @jdavelowe

"No surprise to me that Kempton Park is closing down always looks deserted and prize money ridiculously low for the AW racing."

Jon Ivan-Duke, William Hill PR- @JonIvanDuke
