Martin Dixon's view on the Irish Derby
Speaking on the Tote's World Pool preview show, Dixon said: "It was proper soft ground at Epsom – the times told us that, it was the slowest Derby this century.
“That really suited Christmas Day, and the difference in conditions here is factored into the prices.
“I do think it’s a concern, as it won’t be the same stamina test, and thats;s his forte so it leaves him vulnerable.
“Raaheeb is attempting to become the first horse since Zagreb in 1996 to win the Irish Derby with just two runs behind him. Not that many have tried, but his relative inexperience would be a concern.
“He has a top-class pedigree and the patience that we associate with Owen Burrows suggests that he could be out of the top drawer.
The fact that he was sharp enough and good enough to win on debut, and then make such an impression on his comeback, means he could be a big, big player.
“Since the turn of the century we’ve had eight winners from Epsom follow up in the Irish Derby, but the biggest priced of those was Sinndar who was only 11-10.
“We’ve had four horses who have unplaced at Epsom and gone on to win and I’m counting Benvenuto Cellini in that category here.
“I think he’s very, very skinny, and I couldn’t get firmly enough behind him in order to back him.
"I’m with RAAHEEB – he's the one for me who just might be out of the top drawer, and really burst onto the scene. He could be something very different, and the door is still open for him to be the best of the three-year-old colts that we’ve seen so far.”
