Hugo Palmer is hopeful that
Wait Geordie can follow in the footsteps of former yard favourite Copper Knight in Wednesday’s CAA Stellar Lily Agnes EBF Conditions Stakes at
Chester.
Speaking on the
Nick Luck Daily Podcast on Tuesday, Palmer explained: “He has shown, right from the start, extraordinary gate speed. I said to David Probert, who rode him at Bath, that I think you'll win it from the gates, and he did.
“But he was by no means just clinging on by the time they got to the line. He was two lengths to the good and he hadn't had to pick his stick up.
“It's a race that's produced winners. Obviously, it’s still very early in the season so it’s impossible to really know the merits of various bits of form, but I think there have been three winners come from him, behind him, so it's better than none, isn't it?
“And it gives us a little bit of hope that it was a decent enough race. We couldn't believe he was 9-1 that day because he was strongly fancied by us.
“Which I think puts paid to the fact that people think we're a gambling yard because we're certainly not. But we really fancied the horse and he went off 9-1. So there must have been some fancied runners in behind.”
Palmer has enjoyed plenty of success at Chester’s Boodles May Festival in the past, and the importance of the meeting is not lost on the Manor House Stables trainer.
He explained: “We have a lot of English owners, a lot of Cheshire and surrounding district owners, and everyone wants to be at the May meeting.
“It's a fabulous, fabulous meeting, and everyone local here wants to be part of it. So it's beholden to me to supply as many runners and hopefully some winners as possible.
“The important thing is that we have a winner. Two would be fabulous; that's what we've had a couple of times.
"And, you know, three would be our best return. We're not looking for six or seven winners. We're not going to get greedy.”
