It's a low key start to the week after a terrific November Meeting at Cheltenham, but there are still pockets of interest ahead of the Betfair Chase and another big weekend live on the channel. Here are my three selections from Fakenham and Hereford.
He's been beaten three times as favourite and in five starts since joining Paul Nicholls last autumn – and he will no doubt go off favourite again now switched to fences for the first time in this country.
Amenon ran well in a couple of chases at Auteuil and judged on his best hurdling form gets in here off a very fair handicap mark. He has had a wind operation since we last saw him and he steps back up to three miles here, which will suit him well being by Saint Des Saints.
Nicholls is in fantastic form at present so it seems very unlikely that this seven-year-old will lack for fitness for his reappearance under Harry Cobden.
1.52 Fakenham: Annie Day
There are several runners of interest here despite this being a low-grade handicap hurdle, but if Annie Day turns out quickly from landing a touch at Fontwell I doubt many will improve past her.
She never raced in handicap hurdles for Christian Williams but she caught the eye on more than one occasion over fences where she raced off marks in the low 90s and gave the impression that one day she would land something.
After a long spell off the course, she reappeared last weekend for Ben Case - an excellent trainer of mares in particular - off a mark of 82. If fit she was clearly thrown in and the strong support showed that to be the case. Annie Day won readily and if she is still in the same form she will win this.
She won this race last year from 2lbs higher in the weights and might be worth a small each-way punt here.
Sorbet clearly acts at this unique track where trainer Lucy Wadham (who is in good enough form) has plenty of winners while Eddie Edge claims 10lbs on his first ride back since March having moved to Wadham from Nigel Twiston-Davies. His new boss has Edge booked for another decent ride at Warwick tomorrow so seems to be wanting to give him a fair crack and it isn’t a big stretch to see this mare providing him with a winner early in the partnership.
We have teamed up with Newbury Racecourse to offer you the chance to win an incredible hospitality package for two to the Coral Gold Cup on Saturday November 26! Click here for more details.
