Saturday tip: Dave Nevison hopes for lucky Charm

Dave Nevison has been in fine form this week with seven winners and three seconds from 12 selections. Our pundit and resident website tipster has one early fancy on Saturday after the abandonment of Aintree.

12.40 Sandown: GOOD LUCK CHARM

I have always thought this mare’s name quite strange, but hopefully she might prove a good luck charm for me here!
Good Luck Charm last won on her reappearance last season, and I am hoping it is significant that was her only recent run without blinkers until now.
This trip seems to be her best even though she has gone well over further, and she has come down a couple of pounds and looks reasonably weighted before the jockey’s claim.
My eye is always taken to horses ridden by a conditional claiming 10lbs, especially on a big Saturday afternoon, and a glance at Chad Bament’s rides so far suggests he is definitely competent and well regarded enough by someone like Anthony Honeyball. The trainer has put him up on some fancied runners as well as rank outsiders.

12.57 Aintree: GOLDEN AMBITION

ABANDONED
Golden Ambition won nicely when I put him up at Lingfield and he looks one to be with in his hat-trick bid.
He has been raised 6lbs - which is fair enough given that smooth success - but that rise is more than negated by the 7lb claim of Callum Pritchard. This allowance will not be around for too long given how the youngster is riding.
The step back up to three miles proved no issue for Golden Ambition last time and it will be no issue here if he needs to make his own running out in front.
Trainer Ben Pauling remains in excellent form.

1.32 Aintree: SPRINGWELL BAY

ABANDONED
I see this race as a stepping stone to bigger things.
Springwell Bay was clearly expected to be well suited by the step back up to three miles last time, but this keen goer had nothing left in the closing stages and ended up finishing third of four in a strong novice chase at Cheltenham.
He had previously won a Listed event at Chepstow over this trip on his chasing debut, and those runs in addition to his hurdles rating strongly suggest that he has earned top weight in this competitive handicap.
Springwell Bay takes on seasoned campaigners but he has jumped soundly in both of his runs over fences so far and I have few concerns about his relative inexperience.

2.07 Aintree: NOW WHERE OR WHEN

ABANDONED
Now Where Or When is the outsider of this 12-runner field in most lists and, in a tight handicap over the National fences, he could well have been overlooked.
It looks pretty conclusive that Stuart Crawford’s charge doesn’t stay extreme distances after twice not getting home over 3m5f, yet he still showed that he was a capable chaser in the Ulster National on his final start of last season when only fading out in the last half mile.
The nine-year-old has previously shown winning form after a break, so I am not concerned that this is his first run of the season and I think it is possible that this race has been a major target for the first half of the campaign.
I always respect Crawford’s runners in this country and the trainer has secured the services of Sean Bowen to ride this big-priced runner, and that's certainy another plus.
