Dave Nevison's horse racing tips: Knight can shine at Pontefract

While it’s a shame that some of the handicaps have not managed to make eight runners, Pontefract deserve real credit for staging good quality racing on an otherwise quiet Tuesday afternoon.

Here are my three fancies on the card.

The booking of Ryan Moore for this bottom-weight obviously takes the eye and will clearly impact the price. Yet Epidemic does look the real improver here and can follow up his recent determined win at Leicester.

A stiff 10 furlongs was not beyond him there, so he should certainly appreciate the hill at Pontefract. The 4lb rise for his latest success was enough for a narrow win, but he showed real resolution there and that will stand him in good stead.

He returned to form last time over this course and distance and is only 1lb above his last winning mark. Corinthia Knight won his only previous start at this track off a mark of 97.

He was drawn in stall 11 last time and was still up there battling for the lead only to fade close home and go down narrowly. However, he has bagged stall 3 here and Hollie Doyle should definitely find it easier to get the lead with two slow starters on his inside.

He obviously won’t be 25/1 again after that good run, but he looks a good bet to go close at least for his stable – one which seems to be in its perpetual good form.

Second over course and distance last time, he has a real chance to gain compensation this time.

Delgrey Boy has been fabulously consistent and improved throughout this season. Backed into odds-on last time, he got pounced on by a back-to-form and very well-handicapped rival and lost nothing in defeat despite the disappointment of his backers.

It is really tough to see a negative about his chance here, so I am hoping his busy spell does not catch up with him. The handicapper is due to make it more difficult for him but he can land the spoils here first.
