Our pundit and resident website tipster Dave Nevison has put up 9-2 and 11-5 winners in recent columns and takes aim at the season-opener at Epsom on Tuesday. Enjoy more action - including day one of the 2023 Punchestown Festival – live on Racing TV.
It is a long time since the Epsom spring meeting was a three-day affair and it has seemed to be on the decline in recent times, but the fixture has definitely regained some of its shine recently. Although it’s a one-day fixture these days, there is a very competitive feel to it and I will be very happy to get a winner on the card.
He ran well on stable debut last time after leaving Hugo Palmer and, if he comes on for that run, might just be good enough here in an incredibly tight handicap.
Ollie Sangster seems to know what he is doing based on just a few runners so far - which is perhaps not surprising given his surname – and Dig Two is the only runner he has entered this week, so it will be a very quiet end to the month if he doesn’t go well.
The booking of Oisin Murphy once again obviously takes the eye and Sangster is getting top jockeys to ride for him.
I don’t believe an outside draw in 9 will be a disadvantage here.
The traditional City And Suburban Handicap is another competitive affair full of tricky customers who win infrequently given the handicapper knows their inherent ability.
Lord Protector is running for the third time off a mark of 97 and I am pinning my hopes on the form of the Ralph Beckett yard as well as a wind operation since his last disappointing run in particular. His win at Sandown from last June is looking much stronger than it appeared at the time with two next-time out winners in behind so, if he is breathing better, he may be able to defy this 5lb rise.
This 10f trip is perfect for him and Rossa Ryan, who has been on board for his two latest victories, takes the ride again here.
Alan King has been in very good form for a long time now and might have a handicapper to go to war with here.
Open Champion caught the eye of many punters last time when he struggled to get a run in a slowly-run affair, but this promises to be a very different test with a strongly-run race in prospect here. A look through his form shows he has often competed in races that have not had a decent pace to go at and it is possible that he has not achieved what he may be capable of.
Open Champion is drawn on the outside of a big field and that might be regarded as an issue, but I am happy that this hold-up performer should be able to tuck in early and I have seen several horses fly down the outside over this Derby trip.

Wendigo puts in a nice round at Ayr under Gavin Sheehan for Jamie Snowden on his final run before the Cheltenham Festival, where a clash with Final Demand awaits in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase.

Jamie Snowden’s Wendigo came through his Cheltenham Festival preparations at Ayr with flying colours, with his trainer describing the race as “perfect”.
Last seen finishing strongly into third in the Grade One Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton over Christmas, he was taking a big drop in class for the Join Coral ‘Bet £10 Get £50’ ‘Chasing Excellence’ Novices’ Chase.
Only two were declared to take him on, Donald McCain’s Maximilian, a Grade Two winner over hurdles in January 2023, and Nick Alexander’s Donny Boy.
Maximilian set out in front under Brian Hughes and while Donny Boy briefly led, Gavin Sheehan did not waste time in sending Wendigo on.
Jumping with aplomb, the seven-year-old was soon a long way clear and the 1-5 favourite came home 22 lengths to the good.
Wendigo is a general 10-1 chance for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham.
“You always hope it is straightforward when they are so short in the betting and thankfully it was,” said Snowden.
“It’s a good sign when after the last he picked up immediately, suggesting there was plenty left, it was a perfect race really.
“It’s a long gap between Kempton and Cheltenham so it was nice to get a run into him.
“We went right-handed at Christmas, but we always had a sneaky suspicion he was better left-handed and he did jump out to his left at Kempton. All the graded races between now and then like the Scilly Isles, the Reynoldstown and Pendil are right-handed so we had to go up to Ayr.
“He jumped beautifully today and I think he’s the best of the British in the Brown Advisory, but he’s not had four runs over fences which qualifies him for the handicaps. Our main aim is the Brown Advisory, but we do have options.
“We can watch the Irish this weekend now.”

Willie Mullins’ Charme De Faust made a successful Irish debut in the Thurles Maiden Hurdle.
Sent off the 5-6 favourite, the Rich Ricci-owned filly briefly looked as if she might have a race on her hands turning in but came home a powerful nine lengths clear.
She was cut to 14-1 from 25s for the Triumph Hurdle by Paddy Power.
Winning rider Paul Townend said: “She handled the ground well, will improve from it as she had a couple of blows and she jumped brilliantly. I was able to use her French experience and I think there is plenty of improvement in her.
“I liked how she did it and she has developing to do yet, to fill into her frame. I think she’ll have a nice future and when she strengthens up, she’ll be a fine mare.”
