Racing TV's Harry Allwood has three fancies for Monday's racing action, including an each-way selection who looks overpriced in the finale at Southwell.
This five-year-old enjoyed a productive campaign last season winning three of his ten starts and has shaped better than the results suggest on his first two outings this season.
Jonathan Portman’s charge had stall 20 to deal with on his return to action at Newbury when he would have needed the run and ran creditably behind a handicapper firmly on the upgrade in a 0-100 contest last time out.
Interestingly, Portman said that it took a couple of runs for his charge to blow the cobwebs away following his winter break last year, and the same can probably be said for him this season, given the way he has shaped.
He has been dropped a couple of pounds by the handicapper following his last two starts and although he hasn’t got an abundance in hand off his rating of 84 – which is 3lb above his last winning mark - he ought to be competitive returning to this grade with those runs under his belt.
The selection has a favourable draw in stall two and is versatile ground-wise plus Carp Kid and Lawn Ranger should hopefully set a decent pace to aim at.
Sweet Reward was also guided to success by Rob Hornby twice last year and although his handler may have only had one winner from his past 15 runners, half of those finished in the frame.
World Without Love looked a work in progress on her two starts as a two-year-old last season over what her breeding suggests would have been inadequate trips.
The daughter of Ulysses is closely related to star stayers Subjectivist and Sir Ron Priestley and again shaped with promise when stepped up to ten furlongs on her seasonal reappearance where she wasn’t knocked about under pressure.
One can only imagine she has been brought along with handicaps in mind on her three outings so far and she has been given a rating of 73, which seems fair on what she has achieved so far.
However, better can surely be expected on her handicap debut here, especially with William Buick booked to ride, and a further step up in trip is likely to be a positive, too.
The Johnston team will no doubt be disappointed if their filly is not capable of going close off her opening mark and this doesn’t look the strongest contest, based upon the form her rivals with more experience have shown.
This dual-purpose performer caught the eye on his return to action on the Flat in April and that run should have him primed for his return to hurdles on Monday.
The nine-year-old recorded back-to-back victories over obstacles last season – the second of those being in a 0-140 contest – and he was not beaten far off a rating of 114 on his next outing.
He had excuses on his final two starts of the season and now finds himself 1lb above his last winning mark plus Lily Pinchin takes a valuable 5lb off his back here.
Kevin Frost’s charge has run well over this course and distance in the past and relishes good ground plus his trainer and jockey have both been in good form over the past fortnight.
Although this is a competitive race on paper, Calvinist looks overpriced at 14-1 and is worth supporting each-way.
