2.05 Newmarket: Half Sovereign
Tipster: Dave Nevison.
It is no surprise these days to see Karl Burke trains the favourite in these big sales races, and I will be disappointed if
Half Sovereign can’t strike here and complete the five-timer.
I like betting on what I believe are 'good things' in these large field races, and Burke's charge is a strong fancy.
Purchased for just 12,000gns, she has improved with each run and made all to win a strong Nursery at Doncaster last time out. Her prominent racing style will suit
Newmarket even better, and it is difficult to see any of her rivals improving past her.
2.40 Newmarket: Fallen Angel
Tipster: Alex Scott and Page Fuller.
Sun Chariot Stakes: Angel My Nap Of The Day
Alex Scott says: There are six Group One wins in this field and four of those belong to this outstanding filly. Karl Burke’s four-year-old should have her optimum conditions here on the easy side of good and she is a strong stayer over this trip.
Her front-running style is also perfectly suited to this track, for all she disappointed in the 2000 Guineas last May, but she has tended to need her first run of the year each season, so that effort can be forgiven.
The cheekpieces she has worn since finishing third at Royal Ascot are retained and James Doyle, who rode her so well when winning the Matron Stakes last time, is also on board again.
3.00 Ascot: Prince Of India
Tipster: RaceiQ selection (Andy Stephens).
4.15 Gowran Park: Blood Destiny
Tipster: Page Fuller.
There is also Graded action over obstacles on Saturday, with Gowran Park staging the Grade Two PWC Champion Chase (4.15), and this gives us a great opportunity to warm up our Jumps metrics ready for the season ahead.
For those of you less familiar with our Jumps metrics, our Jump Index rates a horse’s jumping ability as a score out of ten to help us understand who might have an edge.
Blood Destiny may not be the highest rated contender in the race, but his jumping could make all the difference here.
His jumping is rated 8.2 out of 10 compared to Western Fold, who is only rated 7.9 out of 10. We are talking fine margins but, considering Western Fold only scored 7.5 out of 10 on his latest outing, there is a real chance that it could be his Achilles heel today.
I would also not dismiss Blood Destiny because of his Galway defeat as his best form is over this trip, and the sectionals highlight that he got tired last time out over further. He should prove hard to beat.
4.30 Redcar: Leadenhall
Tipster: Martin Dixon.
Tim Easterby is mob handed with five runners in this valuable series final and
Leadenhall may find it a shade easier than some of the very competitive handicaps he's contested this year.
He's been busy since the spring but has held his form admirably, winning twice, and his latest third at Newcastle last Sunday was an eye-catching effort as he finished with a wet sail from too far back.
His mark of 79 is very workable, just 1lb higher than for his last win, and I think a strongly-run race, which this should be, with some ease in the ground, is his perfect combination.
Oisin Orr is a positive jockey booking, whilst a low draw on this straight track is rarely a disadvantage.
