With Kabral Du Mathan a best-priced 8-13 for the Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham on New Year's Day, and no bigger than 16-1 with two firms for the Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle, it is likely Andashan faced an impossible task against Dan Skelton's new recruit at Haydock last time out. 

This 0-130 contest represents an easier assignment for the five-year-old who looked in need of a step up in trip on his return at this track two starts ago, and appeared to stay 2m3f well enough last time out. 

Chris Gordon's charge produced some strong form at Newbury when third in the 2024 Goffs UK Spring Sale Bumper and looked a potentially useful performer when bolting up over hurdles at Kempton last season. He was outclassed in Grade Two company next time out, but failed to settle properly there, and the pick of his efforts suggests he is nicely treated off a rating of 127.

His handler remains in red-hot form and has continued operating at a strike-rate over 20 per cent in the past fortnight, while the ground is also in Andashan's favour.

Stepping up in trip again on Monday could unlock further improvement, and he remains capable of better over obstacles, so there are enough positives to suggest he is worth supporting each-way at a best-priced 13-2, despite this appearing a competitive contest on paper.

Newton Tornado had jumped well until falling on his chasing debut at Cheltenham before showing no ill effects from that fall when making all to win at Bangor on his next start. 

This drop back in trip should not pose a problem on a more galloping track and, despite an 8lb rise for that Bangor success, I still consider him a well-handicapped performer.
