Five horses to follow at Royal Ascot on Tuesday

I can only assume that the reason Notable Speech is around double the price of Rosallion is because Charlie Appleby’s runner disappointed at the Royal meeting last year, but that was on the round mile and, to my mind, he just had an off day.

You can put a line through his other disappointing effort from last year too, where he finished fifth in a falsely run Prix du Moulin on softer ground than he’d have liked. 

Over the straight Ascot mile, I think Notable Speech could be a different proposition, as he is surely likely to be waited with and they almost always get racing half a furlong too soon on the straight course in what is a stiff test. 

He will undoubtedly come on for his fourth in the Lockinge and, if he can replicate the level of form he showed when winning the Guineas or the Sussex Stakes last year, then I think he will go very close.

We have the King Charles III Stakes (3.40), with 23 runners hurtling up the five-furlong Ascot straight at well over 40mph, and again I’m looking further down the lists for value.

West Acre was a late starter last season, not appearing on a track until September of last year, but he has made up for lost time landing Group Two and Group Three contests in Meydan through the winter - his Group Two win in January even broke the Meydan track record.

This stiff five furlongs is ideal and he also occupies the most favourable draw in the eyes of our Draw Advantage metric. Based on 10 years’ worth of data, it determines that a horse drawn in stall 23 is likely to have an advantage over the field of around 0.61 lengths.

In contrast, the stall 10 that Asfoora will race from is a hindrance of -0.36 lengths.

Reaching High doesn’t take much finding as a selection for this race and could easily prove to be a complete handicap blot.

The five-year-old's mother memorably won the Gold Cup for the Queen a few years ago and, while he has not yet shown her talent, he looks to have inherited plenty of stamina and has only had this race as his target ever since he moved across to the Willie Mullins yard.

He got beat a short head on his stable reappearance but ran very well and teams up with Ryan Moore who has won this race for Mullins twice in the past. Reaching High is aiming to be a “hats off” moment for the King and has a very obvious chance of making it happen.
