2.20 Doncaster: Schrodinger’s Cat and Al Shabab Storm

This long-established, sprint handicap is always so unbelievably tight, and is always contested by horses we know well, so it is sometimes difficult to get an angle into the race.
However, a glance through recent results shows that one way of tipping things in your favour is to look at runners ridden by top-class, claiming apprentices.
Three of the past eight winners have been ridden by a claimer, and apprentices got the 1-2 in 2022, so it is definitely an angle worth exploring, in my view.
Schrodinger’s Cat has 7lb taken off him courtesy of Toby Moore, so clearly that is a plus, but I think he is an interesting contender aside from the jockey angle.
Although he has won three times over the minimum trip, I am surprised he has not been stepped up in distance until now as on both pedigree, and the way he has been running, it has often looked as though it would suit him well.
Grant Tuer’s gelding is one of few in this field that may improve for trying something different, and should be amongst the big-priced outsiders (28-1, at the time of writing).
Al Shabab Storm, who is a best-priced 18-1 on Friday afternoon, won a Group Three for Andrew Balding, but didn’t go on for a spell with Marco Botti last year.
He has been picked up by Michael Appleby, who trained the winner of this race three years ago and is a master trainer of older sprinters, in particular.
The four-year-old won on just his third start for the new yard, and was possibly a bit rusty after a mid-summer break last time out.
He should be spot on now, and clearly gets on well with the excellent Conor Whiteley, who claims what might be a decisive 5lb.

4.15 Doncaster: Inspired (nap)

This well-bred, and quite expensive, son of Dubawi was not really living up to his pedigree until the middle of the summer, and since winning a handicap in July, his form has taken off. I believe he can land a quick hat-trick here.
Karl Burke has placed him well to win handicaps at Goodwood and York recently, and he runs here without a penalty for his comfortable success in a competitive apprentice’s event last Sunday.
Inspired is going through the grades in style and though he has never raced at this level as yet his dam was Timeform rated 110 so is certainly bred to cope with at least this level and might end up better still.

4.48 Doncaster: Touch The Moon

I may have rose-tinted glasses when it comes to Saffie Osborne’s mounts in competitive handicaps at big Festivals, but it certainly hasn’t done me any harm recently, so I am happy to stick with her again here.
Touch The Moon is a useful type on the flat and over jumps, and is ideally suited by a strongly-run, competitive event that this race is set to provide.
William Durkan’s gelding came back to winning form in decent style at Dundalk last time out, and off a similar British mark here, he could follow up.
