The Qipco 1000 Guineas takes centre stage at
Newmarket on Sunday and the ten-race card at Headquarters is complimented by an excellent fixture at Haydock, which features the rearranged Betway Brigadier Gerard Stakes.
I have four selections for you, none of them shorter than 5-1 in the early markets.
The general 8-1 on offer seems a very fair price about a horse who is returning to his best trip of ten furlongs and may be able to dominate from the front in a race where there is not much pace signed on.
After winning at Bath last season his season stalled somewhat but there were mitigating circumstances with regard to the ground and trip.
Back to ten furlongs at the end of the season at Doncaster, he was an easy winner in a fast time and the exuberance he showed there suggests that this trip is as far as he wants to go.
The Rowley Mile is a track that lends itself well to front-runners and he can dominate for trainer Mark Johnston, who has made a bright start to the season.
An easy winner of the Cambridgeshire last season off a mark of 98, he then found one too good off a 12lb higher mark on Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot.
Both those efforts suggested he is a pattern-race performer and he duly proved that with a Listed success at Newmarket at the end of the season.
That win came at his first go over ten furlongs and improvement at the trip beckons. The progeny of his sire, Dubawi, improve with age and racing and I expect him to take this step up to Group Three company in his stride.
There is some rain around in the North West, which will not harm his cause and the price is right.
D’Bai is a classy if lightly raced individual. At his best, he is more than competitive at this Listed level.
He won the Al Fahidi Fort at Meydan last year and on his only visit to Haydock, which was in 2018, he landed the John of Gaunt Stakes in comfortable fashion.
He comes here off a break, having contested a Group Three and a Group One in Australia when far from disgraced.
He has been placed at Group Two level and there is some pace signed on, which will suit his hold-up style of racing. The 8-1 available is a decent price.
The Verdict: Angus and Martin Dixon analyse the Cheveley Park Stakes
This filly is widely available at 5-1 and should be backed to land the second Classic of the season.
I have fancied her for the Qipco 1000 Guineas ever since her impressive success in the Cheveley Park Stakes at this track last autumn. She has an extra two furlongs to travel but the way she surged home and hit the line strongly in that Group One feature provides plenty of optimism that she will stay a mile.
Her connections have targeted her at this race and are seemingly unconcerned about the extra yardage. I also like the fact that she has course form and if the trip brings about improvement she is sure to go very close.
She progressed with racing last year and, having had a few runs, will be streetwise enough to handle the hurly burly of a big field.
