Impressive Dee Stakes victor Constitution River was the pick of the Ballydoyle winners at Chester this week, according to his trainer Aidan O’Brien. Constitution River impressed when winning the Futurity Stakes at the Curragh in August and stretched his unbeaten run to three when he stormed seven lengths clear of Generic on the Roodee on Thursday.
The Derby at Epsom and French equivalent at Chantilly are both under consideration for the Wootton Bassett colt, as O’Brien told stand-in host Jane Mangan on this week’s Luck On Sunday programme.
"Everyone was impressed. He will get back up to full work before the lads decide [which race to run in.
“Chester gives both options, and we will decide in the next couple of days. He’s comfortable over a mile and a quarter, but you couldn't say he wouldn't get further.”
Benvenuto Cellini also impressed this week, landing the Chester Vase 24 hours earlier, and is another who did his Derby credentials no harm.
O’Brien explained: “We always thought he’d get a mile and a half but not much further. We think he’d be comfortable over a mile and a quarter.
“We were very happy with him.”
That wasn’t it for horses with Classic aspirations, however, as
Amelia Earhart impressed in a first-time hood and blinkers when beating I’m The One in the Cheshire Oaks. As a result, she leapfrogged that filly to the top of the betting for the Oaks at Epsom.
O’Brien believes that her experience last year will stand her in good stead for the ampitheatre of Epsom.
"We always loved her last year, she took a bit of time to mature but we think she has grown up from last year,” O’Brien said. “We were very happy with the way she behaved.
“I think she's mentally ready for Epsom
“That’s why she raced a lot last year, and because of it we don't have to run her too much this year.”
