Wednesday tips: Society has the Power at Lingfield

Racing UK presenter Angus McNae is on a roll and has four selections to mark your card on Wednesday.

With eight winners in the bag so far since starting my Wednesday column I am looking to keep on rolling with four selections today spread across three meetings.

4.55 Lingfield - Society Power:

This horse can provide trainer William Haggas with another winner in what has been a superb season for the Newmarket trainer.

This son of Diamond Jubilee Stakes and Sprint Cup winner Society Rock made his debut at Windsor 16 days ago and finished second of 10, while being considerately handled by Wednesday's rider Pat Cosgrave, to say the least.

He travelled strongly into contention before just being nudged out to be beaten half a length hands and heels.

He looks certain to improve on that and it should be noted that Haggas had this horse triple entered over the next few days, but this is his favoured race.

This race looks pretty strong and will take some winning but this horse has bags of latent potential and he looks sure to go very close.

5.10 Chepstow - Starshell:

This horse has the look of a typical Sir Mark Prescott improver. In accordance with this horse's pedigree - by Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Sea The Stars out of a Sadler's Wells mare, he has shown much improved form since being stepped up to 12 furlongs.

On both occasions he has tried the trip he has finished second.

Recently at Lingfield he travelled strongly and was only edged out late on by the Ralph Beckett-trained Earthly.

He is ready to take a further step forward now and continue his trainer's recent good form. This being an apprentice handicap Prescott will have a chance to run this horse under a penalty should he win today, and I anticipate him to do just that.

6.55 Kempton - Ortiz:

Henry Candy has his team in good form and Ortiz made a promising debut at Windsor 44 days ago. She shaped as if she really needed the run in terms of experience, but still demonstrated that she had plenty of ability in finishing fifth.

She is clearly open to plenty of improvement and a reproduction of the Timefigure she produced at Windsor should be good enough. She was quite well backed at Windsor, going off at 7-2, which suggests she is quite well thought of. Her patient trainer has given her time to recover from her debut exertions to ensure a step forward rather than a bounce is most likely.

7.25 Kempton - Tamih:

Tamih races in his third maiden, having shown plenty of promise in his previous two runs. In both previous starts he showed a high cruising speed and last time at Newcastle he was only beaten by Important Mission, who has since gone on to bolt up in a handicap at Chelmsford off a mark of 81.

The third in that race was Kynren, who has won twice since that race including a handicap at Newmarket off a mark of 79. More important than such collateral form analysis - which is fraught with chaos courtesy of pace differentials - we can rely on Tamih's excellent Timeform Timefigure of 85, which I think he can improve on and win with authority here.
