2.25 Warwick: Red Windsor
The hill after the last at Fontwell is a real test, and Red Windsor found it too much on his seasonal debut last time out when tying up badly and losing many lengths in the closing stages.
However, it was still a good effort and it is hopefully significant that Chris Gordon’s gelding ran his best race on his second outing last season.
The wheels fell off after that effort over fences and he ran badly under both codes thereafter, but he definitely seemed to be reinvigorated last time. If he can hold his form better this Autumn, he is very favourably handicapped.
The selection is running in the lowest-grade handicap he has contested here, and might well outclass his rivals. Freddie Gordon takes off a valuable 5lb once more, too, and the short and flat run in at
may well suit him better. Cheekpieces for the first also looks a positive move.
3.00 Warwick: I’m Ravenous
I’m Ravenous broke his duck last time in a maiden hurdle at Sedgefield but it was possibly an above-average race for the track, and has already produced a next time out winner.
It is no surprise that Ben Pauling has sent this point-to-point winner chasing after just four outings over hurdles, and for his handicap debut.
A rating of 113 does not seem to overburden him and he acts perfectly well on the prevailing decent ground. He seems set to make a better chaser than hurdler and this race, although competitive, looks a very good place to start.
3.35 Warwick: Getalead
Getalead rattled up a quick hat-trick over hurdles a couple of seasons back and it is notable that the last of those victories came after just a three-day absence, so it could well that immediately after a win is the best time to catch him.
He had run himself down the handicap before he reappeared at Wincanton last week and took advantage of the reduced mark in good style.
That success came over one of the sharpest two miles in the country and he dug deep after getting outpaced turning in, so I imagine the eight-year-old will be much better suited by this longer trip.
Getalead clearly gets on well with his conditional rider, who can claim his full 7lb against professionals here, and that's another positive.
