The Flat season is over – or so I thought.
I am not an All-Weather snob, but I do not usually bet at Southwell.
I am going to make an exception, however, for Corporal Maddox at a general 16-1, although Betfred are 12-1, best odds guaranteed, four places if you are an each-way player, in the 6f handicap at 1.40pm
He returns to this track for the first time in five years and his only start at the course was when he was third there in November 2012.
The ten-year-old has obviously declined down the years – he is rated 62 now, having been 104 in his pomp – but he goes in decent nick all the same, having won at Chepstow on his penultimate start. He was not helped by a wide draw at Kempton last time, either.

Luke Morris, who has ridden him to five successes, is back on board and it is easy to see him rowing away and getting into contention in the closing stages. Hopefully, a winning combination.
I was going to make another exception at the course with Boots And Spurs but he is a non-runner, presumably because his trainer is not happy with how he has come out of his last race.
I was looking at Nefyn Bay in the 2m1f hurdle at Carlisle at 2.05pm and I could not make head nor tail why he was racing off 110 back over hurdles, and not 105, as his official mark suggested he should be.
So I tweeted his trainer Donald McCain and he was none the wise either! I do think the horse can still be competitive – and I suspect he will still go close, though the cheekpieces have been left off – but over to Kempton we go.
We will give the two match races at 2.25 and 3.30 there a miss – what is that all about, with the decent prize money on offer? – but I think Enniscoffey Oscar has a chance in the 1.50pm at Kempton art 18-1 with bet365, William Hill and SkyBet.
This could be a very warm novices’ hurdle but I think the selection could be now ready to give his true running after two efforts this season.
The stable has been very slow to get into gear but have had two winners in recent days and he could be ready to fulfil the potential he showed in a Grade Two Bumper at Aintree in April, and his pedigree suggests this 2m5f will suit. He could surprise some of these.
Cashanova and Salto Chisco nearly made my punting shortlist in the conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle at 4.00pm, - the 12-1 about Cashanova did not last too long , unfortunately - but my last bet of the day is Sumkindofking in the 2.55pm, despite him being 1lb out of the handicap
He hopefully needed his comeback run badly at Chepstow last month because if he did he will be a lot sharper and is running off a 2lb lower mark.
His Kempton fifth last season to Brio Conti suggests he will is fairly weighted here, and it was good to see the stable have a winner at Aintree on Saturday.
He interested me a fair bit at 8-1 last night and the 6-1 with Betfair and SkyBet probably will not last long.
