Maximum Security may miss Dubai World Cup after hitting $20 million jackpot

Maximum Security appears unlikely to bid for a big-race double in Dubai following his historic Saudi Cup triumph.
Before landing the inaugural running of the world’s most valuable race on Saturday, the Jason Servis-trained four-year-old was best known for passing the post in front in last year’s Kentucky Derby – only to be demoted.
The pain of becoming the first horse ever to be disqualified from first place in the Churchill Downs showpiece for causing interference was erased in Riyadh, as Maximum Security carried the Coolmore colours to a battling success over fellow American challenger Midnight Bisou.
The son of New Year’s Day was swiftly installed as favourite for the Dubai World Cup on March 28 – but speaking on Racing TV’s Luck on Sunday programme, Servis cast serious doubt over his participation at Meydan.
He said: “Maximum Security is a little tired this morning. Soundness-wise and physically, he’s very good and he’s scoped clean – (but) he’s lost some weight and has left some feed, which is to be expected.
“The last year and a half has just been crazy – it’s been a whirlwind. At the end of 2019 I was thinking things might quieten down, but it sure hasn’t quietened down! He’s a special horse.”
As for heading on to Meydan, Servis added: “Nothing has been finalised.
“I’m feeling that he might need some more time – right now it’s doubtful we’ll make Dubai.
“I don’t think it’s fair to ‘Max’ to wheel him back in the 28 days after the way he ran. Then he runs fifth (in the Dubai World Cup) – and I’ll be like ‘what was I thinking about?’
“Like I said, nothing has been engraved in stone yet, but I think in fairness to him, he needs ample time – and I want to be in a place where I feel good that he’s 100 per cent and can give it his all.”
