3.03 Thirsk: Simba’s Pride
Simba’s Pride gets the vote here by virtue of his recent consistency. He won nicely at Ripon in May and has performed pretty well off his raised marks in three outings since then.
He looked like a possible winner a furlong out last time over six furlongs here, but didn’t find as much as expected close home.
I am very hopeful that the drop down in trip combined with the application of cheekpieces could enable the Michael Dods-trained youngster to win again.
6.20 Epsom: Hurricane Laughter
In a tight handicap, I am happy to take a chance with the lightl-raced and unexposed Hurricane Laughter despite having some reservations about the tricky Epsom track.
Ed Walker’s three-year-old had the three runs required for a handicap mark last season and in truth didn’t show a great deal without going off at big prices.
He didn’t reappear this season until mid June and he finally revealed some promise in his first handicap where he finished fifth in a decent event on Newmarket’s July Course.
It was pretty clear he wasn’t handling the track very well there, which possibly doesn’t augur well for Epsom, but I feel Hurricane Laughter is likely to be much tighter and focused after that reintroduction and think he is worth siding with.
7.30 Epsom: I’d Go Maniac
I suspect Alan King might have been a little critical of his daughter’s riding of I’d Go Maniac last time out when she allowed the gelding to drop too far out of his ground and left him unable to make a challenge, despite staying on nicely at the end of that 12-furlong Wolverhampton contest.
The combination can do better as they showed previously when second at Windsor and, provided things go smoothly in the race, they could go very close off a 1lb lower mark.
