Andy Stephens, armed with the RaceiQ data, has five fancies divided between York and Ascot.
✅ 1.45 ASCOT: MISS KODI
Miss Kodi made quite an impression when surging clear on her debut over 6f at Chepstow last month and the 16-1 that Paddy Power offer looks generous.
She was quickest through each of the final three furlongs, being the only horse to dip under 11sec in the penultimate furlong (next best 11.37sec) before signing off with a “fast” 11.79sec easing down.
That was at least 0.87sec (about five lengths) quicker than anything else. Her stride hit a peak of 8.43 metres, which was easily highest. The third home, 1-3 chance Eabha, had previously got to within two lengths of the smart Aperoll on her debut and has since scored at Epsom.
✅ 2.30 YORK: ROYAL CHAMPION
Royal Champion has a 5lb penalty to carry in the Sky Bet York Stakes but can prove equal to the task. He was a superb winner of this race 12 months ago, when clocking a time almost 3sec quicker than the RaceiQ Par (the Time Index was 9 when the meeting average 6.8). The globetrotter has continued to flourish around the world and now has a home game.
✅ 2.55 ASCOT: COMPLETELY RANDOM
Completely Random performed wonders to be runner-up in the Wokingham under Ryan Moore last month after being only 25th with two furlongs to run. He’s had the best Finishing Speed Percentage in four of his past seven races and now gets another chance to show what he can do over seven furlongs. He has a favourable draw in stall 12 and Moore is seeking a third win from four rides on him. In addition, Harry Charlton’s runners have exceeded market expectations in the past year, with his Average vs Expected being 2.45.
✅ 4.52 YORK: ZARVALI
Zarvali surrendered tamely when easy to back and tried over a mile at York last time, but is worth another chance back over 7f. His previous two efforts – when a staying-on sixth at York and keeping-on third at Thirsk – were both eye-catching. He travelled fluently each time and neither run got to the bottom of him. His final furlong in that York race was third fastest even though he was only able to hit top stride late on, while his Finishing Speed Percentage at Thirsk was best of all (fastest in the fifth and seventh furlongs).
✅ 5.20 ASCOT: PILGRIM
Pilgrim will be having his first start at Ascot since scoring over course and distance at the Royal Meeting in 2024. He’s only 2lb higher despite being in good heart this term, winning at Musselburgh in April and being a close sixth at York last time. It was run in a time 0.65sec quicker than the RaceiQ par but that was based on the officially “good” going, when it was almost certainly good to soft.
