Bow Echo on brink of joining Frankel and Brigadier Gerard

It takes a special horse win the 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace and Sussex Stakes in the same season. And an extraordinary one to achieve that feat and still be unbeaten.
So extraordinary, in fact, that there have been just three in the past century: Palestine (1950), Brigadier Gerard (1971) and Frankel (2011).
Bow Echo will join that exalted trio if he wins the £1.5 million Goodwood showpiece a week today, and the RaceiQ data points to him having excellent prospects of pulling it off.
George Boughey’s stable star won each of his three races as a juvenile and remains without a blemish on his record. Almost a year on from making his debut, he still does not know what it is to be beaten.
His Group One triumphs this campaign have been gained in contrasting style at the main expense of the same rival, Gstaad, who will again be waiting for him.
Bow Echo thumped him by the best part of three lengths in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May, but the rematch at Ascot the following month was a different story as he scrambled home by a short head.
In another stride, his bubble would have been burst and there would be no talk of him emulating previous titans.

Yet the slenderest of winning margins painted a misleading picture.
Bow Echo was hampered soon after the start, got a little lit up and challenged wider than ideal. He also became something of a sitting duck after breezing to the front off a frenetic early gallop.
Meanwhile, Gstaad got a dream run up at the rail after allegations of team tactics and Christophe Soumillon, riding one of his stablemates, getting a ban for riding a race that benefitted him.
The first half mile at Ascot was chaotic, with the data revealing all the runners clocked their top speeds and fastest furlongs during that period. That is highly unusual for a mile race at the highest level, where things usually build to a crescendo.
This one became almost last man standing with all the runners logging “slow” or “very slow” final three furlongs.
Bow Echo eventually stopped the clock at 1min 38.48sec, the fifth fastest St James’s Palace Stakes this century.
But that sort of time would be pedestrian in a typical Sussex Stakes at speed-favouring Goodwood, with Notable Speech scoring in 1min 35.97sec just two years ago. A difference of 2.51sec equates to about 15 lengths.

RaceiQ’s Par times for the two races paint a similar picture; and then there is the stride data of the big two to consider.
Bow Echo turns over his wheels the much quicker of the pair, and that should give him a crucial pace edge, as was the case at Newmarket where he was efficiency personified as he waltzed from eleventh to first in the final half mile.
He managed that with six successive Par furlongs and then a “fast” final furlong of 12.24sec to seal the deal. There was much more clinical precision than at Ascot, where everything was a bit balmy.
The Night Of Thunder colt averaged 2.36 strides per second at Ascot, with his maximum frequency being 2.50. By contrast, Gstaad averaged 2.27 strides, with his peak being 2.38.
Bow Echo would almost certainly be comfortable dropping back to 7f, if required, but the numbers hint Gstaad would perhaps be even more effective over a bit further.
The combination of a strong pace and stiff mile, plus riding tactics, brought them together at Ascot, but Goodwood should tilt the dice in Bow Echo’s favour, especially if Loughnane resists getting into any more early skirmishes.
The Verdict: how Bow Echo won the 2000 Guineas
This is far from a match, though, with Opera Ballo the principal hope among the older generation.
He made the running in the Queen Anne Stakes and only buckled in the closing stages, ultimately paying the price for some overly strong early sectionals and teeing things up for Ten Bob Tony to pounce from off the pace.
His record of 7/7 when racing around a bend and 0/3 on straight tracks speaks for itself. Goodwood is going to play more to his strengths than Ascot.
Opera Ballo is a notably fast starter, being easily quickest to 20mph in his past two races and has a similar stride data to Bow Echo.
It is not difficult to see the opposition having to dance to his tune, although look out for Ballydoyle pacemakers upsetting his rhythm.
The past three winners of the race have made all or raced prominently, and who can forget how Qirat - supplemented to make the running for Field Of Gold - prevailed at 150-1 last year.
But all the older horses will have to concede 8lb to Bow Echo and contend with his turn of foot, with no wet weather to confuse matters. They face an unenviable task.
