Below The Rader seemed to appreciate the return to hurdles last time after he had fallen on his chasing debut and put up the best performance of his career.

He finished a good second in a big field at Haydock and looked very much as though he was a real stayer, so he might well welcome this step up to three miles.

I am very strong on Freddie Keighley claiming 7lb and am waiting for him to deliver on one of my selections, but the weight allowance will certainly be a positive in this heavy ground slog and I don’t believe I will be waiting too much longer.

This huge, imposing son of Born To Sea was bought for €450,000 after running three times in France as a three-year-old and has always been held in the highest regard by Ben Pauling.

Anything he did over hurdles was a bonus last season, so it was encouraging that he won the Adonis at Kempton, and this season, he has taken his form to another level, having won all three of his starts over fences and progressing with each run, most recently when breaking the course record to win the Wayward Lad Novices' Chase by a wide margin over Christmas.

He will face much softer conditions here, but he handled cut in the ground well enough in France and he is a strong stayer over this trip, having done his best work late on at Kempton last time after trading at 15-1 in running before the turn into the home straight.

His trainer and jockey are both in good form, and whilst Steel Ally commands plenty of respect in this race, I fancy Mambonumberfive to have too much speed for his older rival at the business end of the race.
