1.30 Haydock: Whiskey Pete
Ralph Becket’s 3yo is a strong stayer at this trip and even though this is a very tight handicap, bottom weight will still be an advantage in these conditions.
Whiskey Pete has been gradually running into form and ran his best race of the season last time out when a very good second at Ascot.
His final run last season was a win in soft ground at York in October and he looks well capable of notching another win before this season is out, over this trip or a bit further.
3.40 Newmarket: Bennetot
The Cambridgeshire is the most difficult handicap of the season to solve, even if bookmakers are paying out for several extra places.
One thing we can be pretty sure of is that David O’Meara will pick up some of the prize money and hopefully I have gone with the right one with the ultra-consistent Bennetot.
The 5yo has run solid races on his past two starts finishing placed at trips a furlong either side of nine furlongs.
He was only beaten a head at Ayr last time and probably got going a little too late to peg the winner back, but with the guaranteed end-to-end gallop here, hopefully Billy Loughnane, who won on Bennetot in August, should be able to time his run perfectly here.
Although his recent win came on good to firm ground, he was proven on softer ground in France and I am hopeful he can justify each-way support.
4.45 Newmarket: Yorkshire
Yorkshire bounced back to form last time out after a couple of lesser runs and could be another
winner for Ed Bethell.
He closed to within ¾ of a length at Haydock after staying on from a long way back and hopefully will be well suited by the climb out of the dip on the Rowley Mile.
Callum Rodriguez scored on the son of Harry Angel last season and is back on board here, and the Bethell yard is ending the season in as strong form as it has been all year.
Providing he handles conditions, Yorkshire seems sure to go well.
4.35 Market Rasen: Got Grey
Unusually this decent French flat performer didn’t adapt to life at Gavin Cromwell’s yard and became very disappointing last season.
It didn’t get any better when he joined Helen Nelmes this season and he moved on again after just a couple of runs. There is no doubt that he has now clicked for the Skelton team, though, and Got Grey has won both his starts for them in impressive style.
He has gone up considerably in the weights but based on his back form in France, I still think Dan Skelton has a horse with plenty in hand and with just 10st 2lb to carry in this, he looks a 'good thing' to complete the hat-trick, in my opinion.
