Horse racing tips: Saturday picks and pointers from Dave Nevison

The King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes at Ascot on Saturday promises to be a fabulous race with several generations represented, plus both sexes. I will be watching keenly but it’s the quartet below who will be making up my Saturday each-way Yankee.

Won a Listed race over course and distance on similar ground to Saturday for his previous trainer and, while he has never progressed beyond that level, he did win several handicaps for Keith Dalgleish.

Aberama Gold is now with David O’Meara and hinted that he could do well on his first start for his new trainer when he travelled well but hit the front too soon. He ended up being worn down close home.

He has a good draw in the middle of a big field and should be able to sit just off the pace. Hopefully, the excellent Mark Winn will be able to produce him to lead inside the last furlong.

I fancy this lightly raced, well-bred type is likely to be well backed for this. Promoter possibly didn’t improve as much as was hoped at Epsom last time after a decent reappearance effort at Chester. However, he didn’t fare badly with a combination of the Epsom track and the fastest ground he has raced on perhaps not ideal.

He stayed on well when straightened up at Epsom and and the more galloping track at Newmarket, plus 10f trip, should play to his strengths. His pedigree suggests this trip should be a bare minimum for him. Ralph Beckett, who may have his eyes on Westover in the King George, remains in excellent form.

I put up Baradar at Royal Ascot last time, but his price drifted from 8/1 (when I tipped him) to 25/1 at the off as the sun baked the Berkshire ground.

He ran down the field, but I am sticking with George Boughey’s charge, who seems to have got conditions in his favour once again for this prestigious event.

There is no doubt that on soft going, the five-year-old has it in him to win one of these big cavalry charges as he has already run big races in the Lincoln and the Victoria Cup this season.

I like his high draw and his talented trainer is adding cheekpieces to the tongue tie he has been wearing, which may well help Baradar further. I will be very surprised if he doesn’t run significantly better than last time.

This five-year-old did us a favour at 4/1 recently and, now that he has got his head in front, I fancy he may continue to climb back up the ladder.

He has clearly been freshened up by the move to Julie Camacho’s yard, a switch that has transformed many a sprinter.

Two years ago, Significantly won a couple of handicaps at Ascot off marks of 92 and 96 respectively, including one on rain softened ground, and he is clearly suited to this track. Camacho has summoned skilled apprentice Ryan Sexton and he takes off a useful 3lb.
