Lir Speciale features among a final field of 16 for the Betfred 'Join Our Sports Club' Reverence Handicap over six furlongs (4.45pm). He will be ridden by Marco Ghiani and is chalked up at 9/1 in the early betting.
The five-year-old is trained by Stuart Williams in Newmarket and is exclusively owned by Racing TV members, having been purchased in the October horses in training sale at Tattersalls.
He is already a four-time winner on the Flat and made a highly encouraging return when a staying-on fourth over 5f at Newmarket last month. Stepping back up to 6f seems certain to suit him and hopes are high that will be in the thick of the action for a race where the first prize is £16,200.
Williams has been giving weekly updates on Lir Speciale to Racing TV viewers. It’s been fascinating to see how he is being trained, his work schedule and general wellbeing.
The trainer mentioned on Luck On Sunday last weekend that the Wokingham at Royal Ascot on June 22 could be on Lir Speciale’s agenda.
He is probably struggling to make the cut for that iconic contest as things stand but he’d pick up a 5lb penalty if he wins at Haydock on Saturday (here’s hoping!) and that could mean Racing TV members being in the paddock with him at the Royal Meeting.
All owners will receive regular updates from RaceShare on the horse’s progress and have the opportunity to apply for owners’ badges every time the horse runs and for exclusive yard visits to meet the horse and the trainer.
Every time Lir Speciale runs, we will hold a ballot to determine who will receive official owners’ badges – these lucky members will also share any prize money (less deductions) earned for that run.
All you have to do is claim your share by registering below – shares are limited to active Racing TV members. Ownership will remain valid as long as you maintain your Racing TV subscription.
We are biased, of course, but he ran a race full of promise on his return at Newmarket over a trip (5f) probably on the sharp side for him. Last season, he raced exclusively over 7f and a mile when trained by Roger Varian.
The step up to 6f seems sure to suit him and Williams has said that he will be sharper for that outing. Li Speciale is 1lb lower than at Headquarters, so is just 1lb higher in the ratings than when scoring at Kempton last year.
2 TOUGH ENOUGH
This will be his first run for six months, but his record suggests he goes well fresh. He won first time out last season, plus also ran well on his debut. He won at Sandown off a mark of 87 in August last year, despite a sluggish start, and has slipped back to that mark.
3 FRESH
It’s been 21 months since he last won and he’s been quite expensive to follow, but this three-time Ascot winner is undoubtedly well handicapped (10lb lower than when last successful) and it seems only a matter of time before he takes advantage.
4 BILLYJOH
This grey four-year-old is tremendously consistent and has already won twice this season. He ran as well as he has ever done when touched off at Ascot last time, although he has been nudged up another 3lb and so he is 10lb higher than when last getting his head in front.
5 AL BAREZ
He’s won five of his ten races, digging deep to fend off Billyjoh (who is 1lb worse off) at Southwell last time. On the downside, he’s not run on turf for more than a year and is drawn on the flank in stall 16.
