Cheltenham 2018 is now in the record books, the turf season starts on Saturday, the Randox Health
Grand National is right around the corner and the one thing that I am really looking forward to is All-Weather Championship Finals Day on Good Friday.
I get my fix of All-Weather this Wednesday at Southwell and Kempton and I am lucky to have George Baker in the studio with me again as we peruse a tough eight-race card, which features Spare Parts going to try to retake the lead in the race to become the leading All-Weather horse by wins – a title that comes with a £10,000 prize.
Galileo’s Spear is a well-traveled five-year-old. He began his career in France, where he won over 9.5f at Cluny, before he was shipped to race in America, and then Canada, before he returned across the pond and joined Sir Mark Prescott this year.
He finished just two lengths behind Di’s Gift, the 7-4 favorite for this race, in a race over 2m won by Mambo Dancer on 27th February at Chelmsford and he now meets that rival on better terms.
I like the fact that he is now dropping back down to 1m6f and gets headgear back on – he did have headgear on when he won in France.
This seven-times winner has had the misfortune of running into Captain Lars (who is currently the winning-most horse on the AW with seven victories this season) in his last three starts.
Classic Pursuit ran a huge race last time to be runner-up by a neck to Captain Lars in a 5f Seller at the course when he was meeting that rival on unfavorable terms but looks attractively weighted returning to handicap company.
The other thing very much in his favor is that the Mick Appleby yard is continuing to farm All-Weather races at present – at the start of Wednesday racing Appleby is 8-30 (27%) in the last 14 days.
Holiday Magic is a horse that I am not giving up on just yet. I tipped him two starts ago at Newcastle when things did not pan out as expected and he has since run a good second over course and distance last week.
On the back of that run the handicapper is going to put him up 3lbs, hence connections are having to bring him out again quickly.
Nathan Evans, who rode him to win over course and distance on New Year’s Day (off the same rating) gets back aboard and I prefer his chances to those of bang in-form Mister Music, who has to overcome a 15lbs hike in the weights since he began his winning spree last month.
One of the stars of the All-Weather season this winter with six wins to his name and he looks good to regain his spot at the top of the Leading All-Weather horse list with another win here at Kempton.
Spare Parts already owns two course and distance wins at the Sunbury track this winter, including a really good performance two starts ago to win an identical race to this.
Last time out he found his stamina stretched too far over a mile and today he is back down to 7f – a distance over which he has gained five of his six career wins.
Apprentice Nicola Currie keeps the mount and she has won on him four times from only eight rides.
The race, on paper, appears to be a tougher assignment than his victory two weeks ago, but there does not appear to be any pace in this race outside of him so he may be able to dictate from the front.
