Rachel Candelora's Wednesday tips: Jack looks a great each-way bet at Doncaster

It was amazing to be at Kempton on Saturday as a combination of an afternoon card, an 80’s day theme, and top-class racing brought out a big crowd that had the grandstand rocking - oh yeah, and Enable!!

To be able to see a horse of such quality as Enable up close in the paddock and then watch her turn away a horse as good as Crystal Ocean was something special. Next stop Paris as she has a very real chance to collect a second Arc victory.

As we are looking back, another awesome day of racing was the Wednesday of the St Leger Meeting in 2015 when a certain AP McCoy won the Leger Legends race aboard the well plotted Gannicus to end his career in the saddle with a winner. Moving to today I think there is an interesting horse in this year’s Leger Legends race, albeit at a much bigger price than Gannicus was.

1:50 Doncaster – Khaadem at a generally available 6-4:

I have been lucky enough to be at Newmarket for both his runs.

I was really taken by this son of Dark Angel when he finished third on his debut to subsequent Coventry winner Calyx.

Although he pulled hard on his second start he showed a really impressive turn of foot when coming out of the dip and hopefully he will settle a little better now that he has more experience under his belt. He certainly looks like a potential Group horse to me.

3:00 Doncaster – Global Applause at 3-1 with Ladbrokes:

Seldom does a horse win a 5f handicap with more authority than that shown by Global Applause at Sandown.

The fact that this victory came while burdened by top weight suggests this son of Mayson is now much better than a mere handicapper.

Sandown was his first start for Robert Cowell and one can only presume he will continue to improve for this top trainer of sprinters.

Cowell has sent out the Scarbrough Stakes winner twice in the past.

3:35 Doncaster – Fleetfoot Jack each-way at 20-1 with Betfair and Paddy Power:

Most of the horses at the top of the betting for this year’s renewal of the Leger Legends race are three-year-olds, but that age group has a very poor record in the event.

The last three-year-old to win was in 2010 and it probably should not be a surprise that young horses have struggled, given the weights carried in this race are considerably higher than in normal races on the Flat.

Several of these have probably been laid out for this contest and I am hoping that is the case with Fleetfoot Jack. He should have his ideal conditions on Town Moor, given he is best at a mile, best with some cut in the ground, and all indications point to the fact that he is best fresh off a break. He checks all of those boxes here and should be a nice each-way price.

7:15 Kempton – Quicksand at Evens with Betfair and Paddy Power:

Quicksand was eye-catching on debut closing from mid-pack to be third, staying on well to be beaten by Lah Ti Dar.

That debut was in April and we have not seen her since, but trainer Hughie Morrison will have this daughter of Footstepsinthesand ready to go for her belated second start.

Quicksand is stepping up to twelve furlongs for the first time but has Group Two and Three winners over this distance in her pedigree and the manner with which she was staying on on debut suggests this added trip will suit.
