Presenter Rachel Candelora nominates horses she is looking forward to watching at the All-Weather Championships Finals Day and has four tips for Wednesday.
It’s almost here - the fifth All-Weather Championship Finals Day where the five-month long all-weather season culminates in a spectacular day of racing and fun at Lingfield Park.
I am lucky enough that this Friday will be the third time that I will be going to Finals Day and it is just a fantastic event. They have a bugle call to post, the winner’s enclosure is moved to the turf track in front of the stands and the Lingfield grandstand really does rock!
This year the fields for the six all-weather championship races are very competitive and are internationally represented with several runners from France and Ireland coming to take their chance at the serious prize money.
Horses that I am looking forward to seeing include the French raider Funny Kid in the Marathon, Gifted Master in the Sprint, Corinthia Knight in the 3-Y-O Final and Second Thought in the Mile.
One of the great aspects of this season has been the battle between Spare Parts and Captain Lars to be the winning-most horse, which has brought the every day races into the spotlight.
Also. this year the trainer’s championship is going to the wire with previous champion trainer Mick Appleby going head to head with Archie Watson.
In the meantime, here are four selections for Wednesday:
One area of British racing which was completely new to me when moving to the UK was point-to-pointing and hunter chasing.
Having now been to the couple of point-to-points, I am beginning to see the attraction of this area of the sport and the finish of this year’s Foxhunter at Cheltenham was probably the best of the entire Festival.
Enthusiastic owner/rider David Maxwell is having a tremendous run of success and his Unioniste is obviously the one to beat here, but Carraig Mor might be worth a speculative interest.
The lightly raced 10-year-old hails from the yard of Christopher Barber (the grandson of the great Richard Barber), who was gifted the horse by his previous owners.
His back class under Rules reads well and his point-to-point win at Charlton Horethorne this month was impressive, when he made all of the running to win by 10 lengths under Martin McIntyre, who resumes the partnership.
Lost out on a five-timer by a neck last time at Lingfield and has solid claims of quickly getting back to winning ways.
Esspeegee has run over course and distance three times in his career and boasts two wins and a runner-up effort from those runs.
With his versatile run style, 7lb claimer Darragh Keenan has plenty of options for where to be positioned during this race from stall 3. Of the main dangers, Champagne Rules may have fitness doubts coming here off a four-and-a-half month break, while Something Brewing needs to improve.
This daughter of Iffraaj won on debut for Charlie Appleby at Lingfield over a mile in a similar fillies’ novice event.
Drawn towards the inside, she broke slowly but then was hustled up to sit three back on the rail, split rivals at the top of the stretch and pulled away.
She did race slightly green in the stretch and with that experience under her belt there should still be more to come. She has a 7lb penalty but main danger Sketching has to concede loads of weight.
Since being gelded and switching to handicaps Lord Caprio has posted two wins and a second at Newcastle in just three starts.
He broke his maiden over 7f before winning again, over course and distance, carrying a penalty just nine days later. He was given a bit of a freshener before he came back and ran a solid second, missing by just half a length, in a course and distance apprentice handicap.
That race was won by Bad Dog, who made all in a slow time, with Lord Caprio closing strongly but not able to land the blow.
He should have a hotter pace to run at with Elixsoft and Breakfast, drawn to his inside, being keen, front runners.
With the pace scenario to suit, a run under his belt and winning jockey Paul Mulrennan back aboard Lord Caprio looks a good bet.
