This weekend is for me all about the international action at the 35th Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs and for jump fans the “48 Hours of Jumps” at Auteuil.
Below is my play of each day of the Breeders’ Cup which I will be watching from a café in Paris handicapping the big jumps meeting. Before all that. Three selections for Wednesday.
Seeks to follow up a win six days ago at Southwell in a Conditional Jockeys’ race, so he is unpenalised here. Charlie Hammond, who was aboard for last week’s win, keeps the mount on this progressive four-year-old in a race in which most of his rivals look exposed.
This daughter of Dawn Approach won well on debut over course and distance in a fillies’ Novice before going down by a neck at Newcastle over a mile in a race where the winner got first run on her.
She still raced a bit green that day so the extra experience on Wednesday, back at Kempton, should stand her in good stead and there appears to be a bit of pace for her to aim at.
Roger Varian’s filly does have to give away a penalty but her main danger, Sky Defender, is stepping up in trip when he has not indicated that the extra furlong will suit.
Divine Messenger will always have the distinction of being the last horse Pat Eddery bred, and he looks to be the answer to a tricky Kempton handicap.
He won here in May over course and distance before running a neck second behind a well-in handicap debutant of Hughie Morrison.
This son of Firebreak has been freshened before coming back for the all-weather season proper and he has run well off a break in the past. Also, he should have some speed to aim at in the stretch.
Breeders Cup selections:
Friday: 8.00 Churchill Downs: Newspaperofrecord
This is the eleventh running of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies turf and in its short history it has paid to stick with the home team – more specifically the home team that is trained by Chad Brown.
The protegee of Bobby Frankel, Chad Brown has won this race a record four times and his lone runner this year, Newspaperofrecord, is a standout on form. This daughter of Lope De Vega is undefeated in two career starts, both wide-margin successes including in the prep for this race, the Grade Two Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont – a race four winners of this have scooped en route.
Saturday 9.44 Churchill Downs: Catholic Boy (Each-way)
The Breeders’ Cup Classic looks open with a full field of 14 but Catholic Boy has the least to prove.
He is a dual Grade One over the 10f distance, he handles dirt, he has a versatile run style, and he is proven in the hoopla that is the Breeders’ Cup.
Catholic Boy is coming here off an impressive win in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga where he got the better of Mendelssohn and is fresher compared to some of his other rivals who have had one or two more preps.
He has made all the running and sat off the pace and with stall 3 jockey Javier Castellano can put him anywhere he wants before they hit the first turn.
The draw, among other things, has taken out Thunder Snow and Roaring Lion, while Accelerate was always going to be one to oppose and his outside stall just cements this fact.
Many, including Mendelssohn, are not proven over 10f, while the Bob Baffert team of McKinzie and West Coast are the main dangers but they still have had only one prep each since March.
